Sorry to do this on here as it's very off topic, but it seems to be a good source of knowledge, so please excuse me...
It seems my dreams of owning a soft top Series will have to wait as I'm told a skiing holiday for the family is more important 
Does anyone have any good recommendations for family ski holidays two adults with some but no recent experience and two children 9 & 7 with virtually no experience? Would be Easter next year 30th March for 1 week, too late in the year? It could be half term 15th February. SWMBO is saying we ought to go all inclusive but it's coming out over £5k for a week

Saint Gervais. Hands down best resort for what you have described. And no need to go All Inclusive at all.

Check out Stanford Ski in Megeve, France. Have been going to Megeve for 15+ years and stayed with Stanford Ski in their Sylvana Chalet the past 5. Price includes accommodation, breakfast, cakes, and dinner with wine and they have an honesty bar in the evening which is extremely good value. Accommodation is homely and no frills however for a week skiing it is more than adequate..........
Just 90 mins from Geneva or can be driven in a day depending on your UK location. Resort is great for beginners and intermediate. Check the Megeve webcams http://www.stanfordskiing.co.uk/ Cheers |

BTW, how many of you are there? Friends have just bought a nice 2-bed apartment in St Ger centre. 100m from the bars/shops etc, 10min walk to lift. Great spot and brand new. Saint Gervais is decent for families as is Avoriaz. If you go during Feb half term then I would avoid Megeve as it's absolutely mental then. Any other time you'll be fine.
During half term and Easter generally means very busy slopes, lift queues and large ski school classes at most resorts which can be intimidating for little ones starting out. So I would suggest checking out Yllas in Finland. No queues, incredible snow and excellent ski schools in a quiet resort. There are also lots of other activities for the young'uns if they don't fancy skiing all day. Check out Inghams for prices. Self catering log cabins would be my choice. |

Easter next year is late so half term is probably a better bet snow wise, although this year has been a belter.
St Gervais, really great place to go with family. It is comparatively low so you may not be able to ski back down to the bottom of the Bettex lift, which is no great hardship. Scoot up to Les Contamines for a change of scenery and some really pretty runs. Les Carroz- family friendly, a nice mix of skiing for differing abilities. Very easy transfer from Geneva, under an hour. Do Le Cascade, a pretty 14km run down to Sixt with a nice restaurant at the end. We went in a catered chalet at half term, the rooms were basic but the lounge / bar and food were excellent. Kids were something like 60 euros for the week. St Martin de Belleville- a bit more expensive than the other two, both for rent and ski passes (3 bed apart at Easter was £2k, family pass for 3 Valleys is circa £900). Need to be ok skiers to enjoy it as no nursery slope in St Martin itself. Pourquoi Pas is the bar where all the English go so avoid / go as you see fit! Go up to Val Thorens and find the highest point in the 3 valleys- there is a terrifying zip wire for those without fear. I watched:-) I’d go back to all three without hesitation. Lots of friends have been raving about Austria claiming great skiing and lower costs than France. Worth a look. |

Oh and be warned. If you are going during Feb half term then Geneva airport is nuts. Think Mecca at holy time or Carnival in Rio but with more people. So pre book transfers well in advance.

Have ditched Europe now for the states. Canada last year and Lake Tahoe this year. Far cheaper too.

Canada and US are great but 5k would be a stretch during school hols. Plus you need at least 10-14 days to justify the journey.

Disagree totally. I am anal about keeping track of costs
Tremblent 2017/18 family of 5 Flights £1670 BA 4 star hotel B&B studio room, outdoor hot tubs and heated indoor pool £1138 7 seat Minivan inc fuel £399 £995 lift passes £470 eating out and shopping for lunch. I stand corrected. Although i presume you had your own equipment which I'm guessing JOW doesn't?
We have done Jackson Hole, Lake Louise, Banff and Tremblant with our own stuff and never managed to get it anywhere near 5k. Admittedly we did 10 and 14 days. |

Fair point. We have our own boards but always feel the joint lift pass and gear prices almost negate the hassle of taking ours. Think it was $125 a head.
OP was for a week. We have decided to try and see the world a bit more on ski trips so it’s not just Europe. Kids won’t be with us long so best make the best of it! 1951 80" S1 2.0 1995 110 300TDI 1995 90 300TDI |

Totally agree. We made the same decision a few years back. Now we do one 'big' trip each year plus a couple to Europe, Scandi.
It's a big world out there! |
