2012 Defender 110 SW, 60K Miles, New Engine Required...
Is this right??

I am dismayed by the news from our very trusted mechanic that this could be the case.

Timing chain failed, new engine required.
60k miles. Serviced. Maintained. Driven and cared for cautiously by me (38k miles when I bought with thourough service history).

I feel rather cheated, do I have a right to, or is it an unreasonable expectation that an engine in a vehicle of this value, quality and reputation, in such good condition, from a company whose reputation and traditions are built upon these very vehicles, should have achieved considerably more? The aforementioned mechanic is equally surprised at this turn of events, would Land Rover be?

Any comment or advice would be gratefully received

Thank you

Ps. Having learned to drive in a lightweight over 20 years ago, my first, which I still have and is going strong, I am a believer! This vehicle has had one engine replacement (second hand) approx 20 years into its life and is going strong some 20 years later; the defender was to be my final vehicle purchase and the three of us destined for the sunset, should I expect a brand new britpt engine to see us through or be preparing to replace again in another 60k? If so, the dream that is my Land Rover might just have woken me by kicking my belief in the nuts and bolts

I wouldn't hold out much hope of any response to this thread from JLR, since "Stacie" doesn't appear to have engaged at all with the forum since announcing her appointment in December last year. Very disappointing after the help and engagement we've had from some reps in the past.

I believe that some forum members have eventually had a reply after repeatedly private messaging her but have the impression that the replies have been less than useful.

You may find that a letter or email directly to JLR has marginally more chance of a reply.

That is very disappointing to hear, especially as I have a 2012 110 SW on 56k Shocked

I'd be interested to hear how this plays out. James

That’s a bummer.
I’d be on the phone to Land Rover, shouting, begging, pleading for some sort of help. It can’t hurt to ask and you can always threaten to post it far and wide on the Internet if they don’t.

Important thread. For me at least, since I got a 110 on 40 000 miles.

Despite of her value, quality and reputation, in such good condition, from a company whose reputation and traditions {...} this car has already died twice on the road within 5 yrs:
1) an unresposive DPF - luckily within JLRs "grace" period.
2) an output shaft corrosion and failure - within the Alps somewhere far off ...

The cheap and crappy cars I hqve had before (Citroën 2CV) have been very reliable.
No failure for 20 yrs from 1993 until 2013 until I bought this Land Rover in 2013.

I'm not quite sure what to think about this company and on what «their reputation and traditions are build upon».
But I suspect their cars are overestimated ...

Very bad luck.

Do you know if the oil pump recall had been done? I just wonder if it was possible that the engine had seized causing the timing chain to snap rather than the timing chain being the cause?
