hi there.
as some of you know already I'm no IT guru hence I have no idea which way to go than to say I've got cloudphobia and hence don't like the idea of dropbox where files are retained off site. I'm looking to back up files and give us (the family) access to the same and most recent files without having to email each other use memory sticks etc. I'd like us to have a common area for retaining photos, music for streaming and of course the business stuff too. Not to bothered about getting remote access to files (ie when not at home) but I guess it might be helpful in the future. Was thinking of one of these but really not sure? Networking is pretty much mandatory for file sharing, a nas will be better for low power always one.
Remember that any onsite only solution doesn't really have any redundancy (in the form of off-site backup) Also look at resilio cloud sync. Offers a lot of the features of Dropbox, but doesn't store the files off-site, just syncs between your machines Using an old xp machine in 2018 is a far worse choice, security wise, than any cloud based solution. Why are you so anti cloud? |

being reliant on the internet is one reason .....I guess the other is being old (fashioned). 
Ok if the house burns down that's a problem but the NAS with two hard drives in my mind gives some good security? not really sure how it works but would it synch ie could I have the most recent files on my laptop as well as the NAS and then it synch both ways? ie if someone else updates a file will it update my laptop as well as the NAS? .....and it's a nice looking box |

To get rapid sync between the Nas and the laptop you'd probably need to run a service like resilio. The ideal would be a nas and PCs, all running resilio, with the Nas setup to duplicate across both drives (you can configure them to duplicate or extend the storage)

I have the DS212j (older version of Ds218j I believe).
It's great and has been running in the background for 6 years without any issues. The beauty of the 2 bay ones is that the 2 hard drives are mirrored, so if one fails you don't lose everything. Plus all you do is plug in a replacement drive and the Synology will re sync all your data to the new drive. |

thanks. I understand the 2nd drive business.... what do you mean 'in the back ground' and what do you use it for if you don't mind me asking? |

You could do a lot worse than look at a Western Digital My Cloud set up. We've had a 16TB 4 disk array for about four years and it's proved to be reliable and easy to use. Darren

Ditto. Mine also acts as the CCTV hub via the Synology Surveillance Station - one of the software options. |

I have had a few Synology NAS boxes, brilliant, reliable, currently running an 8 way and a 4 way.
I change my disks every 3 years, and NAS box every 6, retiring the oldest and demoting the main one to backup. great UI and they also have a couple of routers with the same O/S. |

next time you're passing between Edinburgh and Salisbury you fancy dropping in and setting it up for me 
should arrive tonight - so tonight or tomorrow would be just fine

Thanks Caterham but honestly they are simple to setup, buy a 2 bay and a couple of 6TB disks and mirror them unless you need more than 6TB stick to a 2 bay unit. 3- onwards you’ll be looking at setting up raid arrays
You can even interface with one drive, google drive and lots more If you are still unsure you can download the operating system Manual .. enjoy |
