Can anyone confirm if polybushes are a vital accessory when doing a full Bilstein/Spring upgrade, merely a 'nice-to-have' or indeed completely unnecessary? Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've read some argue standard OEM bushes are better as they take out vibration which the polybushes don't. But I think the polybushes give less play/roll and therefore a harder ride?

I'll follow with interest. James

Yes, heard the same. I'm not concerned with hardsher ride, I've always preferred stiffer, better handling set-ups/cars. What I am keen to do is get the best road-going set-up I can, and ideally reduce the annoying bounce from the rear when driving over rolling roads, surface changes etc. Happy for a stiffer ride if the bouncing reduces/stops. Given my DC will rarely go any further off road than country tracks (certainly not full cross-country, 4x4 trials or desert dunes etc) then road driving is the focus Monsieur Le Grenadier

The main advantage of Polybushes is that they're easier to fit than OEM ones. Regardless though, they wouldn't cure bounciness, which is down to your springs. Darren

I need to replace the lower bushes (I think) on the rear shocks, I let my LR man persuade me to change to poly bush and on just these can't tell any difference to be honest. James

Wouldn't recommend Poly, at least on mine I went the hard version due to colour mostly.
Sheared my rear damper top mount straight off!

Back on Genuine, no problems at all.

In theory fitting is supposed to be easier with Poly DIY, until you realise that some bushes you can't get out without drilling the damned things and once you do get the Polys on in some cases it's extremely difficult to get them in concentric without a press.
To my mind they cause more problems elsewhere rather than, being a wear and replace item which is actually cheaper.

This is just my experience, on lower bushes you should be okay but I found they wore a bit on the metal non threaded shaft more than I'd have liked. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I have the B6 Kit for £366 inc VAT including the steering damper from Alive ,which was fitted about 2,000 miles ago and -1" springs. The handling and general ride is a lot smoother with less body roll ,turn in is very sharp.I have OME bushes ,I did fit Poly bushes to my 200TDi off roader 90 some time ago and found them too hard .Jame's I would thing you would have to fit a complete set of Poly Bushes to feel the difference.

Can anyone comment on how easy it is to replace suspension as a relatively inexperienced home mechanic. With the right tools, is it a straight process or do things crop up where experience is essential? I’m just wondering wether to give this ago at home sometime, or whether it’s better to book in somewhere.

I'm the same as Fellrunner as well. It looks like a relatively easy nut and bolt job? Or is there setting up required or specialist tools?

Legin, you say OME, as in Old Man Emu or OEM as in genuine LR bushes? Thanks.

I'd be sticking with standard springs. I am considering adding spring isolators as I read they improve comfort and cabin noise? I believe they're 8mm each so if put top and bottom give a half inch lift as well Smile Or would you put them just on the top? James

If you're changing both the springs and shocks at the same time then its pretty easy, just make sure to read up on the different techniques. Back ones are a piece of cake, the fronts can be a little harder but shouldn't cause any real problems.

I changed just the springs on my puma for the alive springs and on the front it became a bit challenging trying to get the already fitted shocks through the springs, spring clamps are essential and even then there was a lot of swearing and hurt knuckles involved.

I went with the spring isolators because I didn't want the drop that the alive springs have. I do feel they make a difference, however I have only tried them with the new springs so could well be them making things quieter - my thought is, while you're doing it, for the sake of a few £ its worth sticking them in. (I only have them on the top of my springs)

Thanks Deaallen. Bow down

I think Professor Google and Dr YouTube will offer further help.

One final question, can this been done on flat ground, one wheel at a time using just a vehcile (tripod) stand or is it a bit more involved than that? Monsieur Le Grenadier

I only used a bottle jack and maybe some axle stands when I did mine, bottle jack under the axle on the shock you're changing, then axle stand the other side, use the jack to lower and raise the side you're doing as you need to Thumbs Up
