97 Defender windscreen bulkhead removal and refit
Hi Forum,

i have seen some rust on the edges of the bulk head where the windscreen assy meets the top part of the bulkhead (although i suspect not too bad). That being said the landy if going through a refit so all the dash bonnet etc.. as all off so this presents a prime opportunity to remove inspect (repair / coat and seal etc..)

I am Censored if i can find any guides on performing this - from what i can tell the brackets at the base either side - but there is mention of having the bulkhead loose and or loosening the roof (but these are parts of a much large restoration so I am not sure this is really required just to remove this frame/windscreen assy

any guides , gotchas and quirks would be gold if you can share with me

To remove the windscreen frame, it's necessary to unbolt the roof as the frame is fixed between it and the top of the bulkhead. Darren

I'm not sure about guides but if you remove the headlining it's pretty obvious how it's fixed. There are a row of bolts across the top of the windscreen and at various other locations around the perimeter.

The parts book is really useful for this sort of thing as it shows how things fit together and where the fixings are. Darren

Well yes and no.

You don't need to remove the whole roof, But you do need to remove the screws along the front edge. which are concealed by the head lining. Once they're removed you can undo the lower mounting blocks/hinges. And the screen assy will come out from under the roof by pulling the bottom first. (You'll also need to pop the wiper arms off too, they'll be in the way)

ok great- thanks for the feedback and info, so from what i understand the windscreen housing 'should' come out after all the surrounding anchors have been romoved

You will find that the rust is much worse once the windscreen frame is removed. Land Rovers have a nasty habit of saving the worst rust as a surprise for you !

It should yes, the upper fixings are obviously once you slide back the front head lining.

Probably best not to disturb the seal above the windscreen frame to the roof as this will probably cause more water ingress issues and worsen any rot, I'd lift the roof off and do it properly or at least tilt the front of the roof up using a ratchet strap on a beam, this'll give you access to the bulkhead. After loosening roof mount bolts of course.

If you're going to lift the roof off you'll just disturb the seals either at the top of bottom of the rear quarter tops instead of the upper screen frame seal. So I don't think it makes much difference which way you do it, although just taking the screen frame out takes less time.

Don't forget the screen surround needs to be lifted off the pins in the bulkhead. Ray
