Foot Pumps
I seem to get through a foot pump every 2-3 years. Draper, PCL, whatever, they just don't seem made to last!

Anyone have any ideas about a good foot pump? At the moment I have a slow puncture on my XC70, and I am using the double-barrel pump weekly (just getting-by until I put my summer wheels/tyres back on next week, when I will get the tyre fixed), and it's creaking and wheezing.

So hard to buy some quality tools, the market is flooded with Chinese crap...

Anyone have a good pump??? Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

You are absolutely right, it is very hard to buy a decent quality foot pump unless you go for a refurbished vintage model. I gave up and bought a small Clarke Bandit air compressor.

Michelin 12209. Voted best in a test by Auto Express




Michelin’s digital double-barrel range-topper remains our favourite foot pump. Obviously, that excellent digital display with good-sized white figures on a black background has a lot to do with it, but so does the near-70cm-long hose, compact screw-on valve coupling and the gauge’s excellent accuracy – just 0.5psi low in our tests. We also appreciate the thought that’s gone into storage between uses; the product locks together securely and easily, there are dedicated clips to hold on to all those easily lost accessories and to route the hose neatly. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

That Michelin one looks very similar (except the guage) to the one I have now... It's lasted 2-3 years...

I'll take another look

I also thought about buying an old one and refurbing... I am sure my granddad had a "kismet" one most of his life... you just can't get ones like that anymore Sad

If you read all of the comments on the Auto Express Review, most of them say that those Michelin pumps are badly made and have not lasted very long at all.

This chap claims to be able to provide parts for any pump:

"REPLACEMENT WASHERS - I ALSO HAND MAKE AND SELL WASHER KITS IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN RESTORING YOUR OWN PUMP...I PROVIDE THEM FOR ANY PUMP. THE KITS COME WITH FULL INSTRUCTIONS."

The older ones were over engineered so a refurbished old one seems to be more robust and useful than new.

My Halfords but British made one is just coming up for 28 years of effective operation. I do have a battery powered compressor as but find it is quicker and easier to get the pump out for topping up at home. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

My cousin has used a Joe Blow track pump (cycling) for his Cars for as long as he has been driving (5 years).

It pumps up pretty quick and is easier to use than a foot pump I think. Not as portable though.

He also uses it on track days to adjust the tyre pressures on his track car Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

They're top quality, re-buildable, and you can also get spare parts!

However I prefer a high output (ie double chamber) foot pump for the car. I wish Blackburn made them to the usual Blackburn quality...but they don't

However a bike pump is hard work on a car tyre (except to alter by a few psi), but it does the job.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
