How do you check the transmission fluid level?
Hi there,

Sorry for the Noob question but just wondering if there is a way to check the transmission fluid level. The fluid is red (see the pic) so I assume that’s what it is. I just had the entire clutch and transfer case rebuilt...

Netherlands 2003 Defender 90 Td5 PU Caledonian Blue
If it is red I think it is the gearbox oil. The fill plug id on the side half way up.

The transferbox oil stinks and is more brown. and the fill plug is at the back near the hand brake drum.

I can't really see where the leak is. Roel

Yea. I can't really see where the leak is either. Its a bit odd as there seems to be drips collecting in three different areas 1999 Defender 110

Yes, installed the roamerdrive shortly after shipping my Defender over here. Makes a huge difference for longer drives... 1999 Defender 110

The synthetic oil specified for the Roamerdrive leaks more easily than the 90 wt oil LR specifies for the LT230 T-case. Some of those drips look to be from the t-case. I have the same issue. Never leaked till I put the synth oil in to it when I installed my Roamerdrive. It seems to weep more easily through the gaskets no matter how well they did not leak prior to the synth oil.

Thanks for the reply. Here is a close up of what I think is the gear box. Colour looks red to me which indicates it’s gear box ie transmission fluid as opposed to transfer case fluid?

Yes that looks like ATF which many put in the gearbox. If you cannot see where it is leaking from, a spot I found on many gearboxes is the top shift tower. Where it mates to the gearbox. You can access it from the top middle plate between the seats. It cleverly weeps down the gasket and makes it very difficult to trace. If it is wet up there that is likely where it is coming from. Four bolts lifts it then seal it nad put it back👍
