Top Gear Velar - Staged?
So, I’ve just caught the end of Top Gear and saw them ‘testing’ the Volvo, Alfa and Velar. I might have missed something but why did they stage Rory getting lost in the Velar? While the others were hammering the other two within an inch of their lives, Rory was driving gently around a field of sheep. Was Land Rover too worried it wouldn’t hold its own or were they too worried about breaking it? From what I’ve read, it’s a pretty capable machine so can only assume it wasn’t the latter. 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

Years ago I used to avidly watch TG, but stopped watching it because of Clarkson and his sycophant team (though Clarkson makes a good read)

Anyway, I have tried to like the re incarnation of TG but having just watched the tail end of the last episode, (like the op) I will never watch another second of the programme ever again. What a load of complete tosh!!

In the Grand Tour they tested the Velar, Alfa and Porsche Macan. Both the Alfa and Macan's 4WD systems failed in one of the tests and the Velar performed flawlessly.

I would say the Velar would probably have come out best of the 3 by a fair way, they probably knew that and so staged getting "lost" Rolling Eyes 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

It’s just a complete load of pap.
I get annoyed with myself for even having it on, but what’s the alternative.
A big pile of old Landy mags.

Like Andy Doe i got fed up with Clarkson and his cronies. I saw the "new" TG the other day for the first time and it was even worse than the Clarkson version with those three new idiots.

I can never understand why they have to hurtle around a race track and drift around every corner, has no one told these idiots that the fastest way around a track is not in a sideways drift.

Maybe I'm just an old fashioned fart who fell in love with Vicki Butler-Henderson. Defender 90XS SW

I'm sure I'm in the minority but I think the new Top Gear is an improvement.

I can take it or leave it. It improved once Chris Evans quit and the chemistry between the three of them now is ‘marginally’ better than last season. It was always staged but at least you could forgive the original trio as they didn’t know any better. This time round it all just seems a bit cringy. 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

I too got tired and bored with Clarkson and co. I had hoped that new presenters would lift the show out of the smug, self satisfied mire in which it is stuck!

Sadly the new presenters are just copying the old format. They could have changed the format entirely and (for example) turned it into a programme about cars and motoring! Laughing

Top gear should have had it plug pulled years ago, How I see clarksons point of view of cars, " if its not an aston martin, its Censored " The other two are just his little pals he likes to wind up. Richard Hammond I think restored a car, just to get on the right side of the classic car owners. With the three of them destroying classic cars, they said about the morris marina, was a shed, Yes but that shed still had rare bits on it, That you cannot get hold!
" the stig" he cannot race of peanuts! the one that come out and said he was the stig, Did a round in the btcc about 8 years ago, and he was no where to be seen on the grid!! So how does that work then?

Lost what the show was about years ago really, when you look back to it back in the 1990s When they used to host rally specials! and test drive cars that we would buy.

There was some uproar online about some car show, which happen to bin off a Ford mk2 escort, by hitting a massive bolder. Rolling Eyes
Car programs really shouldn't be about screwing and destroying cars, it should be about the motorsport, and what the average person would buy, or even do what mark evans, and edd and his pal do. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

You may have missed it but Clarkson, May and Hammond haven't done Top gear in over 2 years now....

As for destroying Marina's I struggle to shed a tear for even pristine ones being destroyed, I feel more sympathy for the pianos and I don't even play. As for rare parts, they did apparently make a point of finding homes for the wrecks when they finished with them. Most that I saw being 'destroyed' weren't actually destroyed, they just had their roofs caved in, I'm sure most of the parts worth salvaging were quite salvageable.

Personally I think it's much more car orientated now, it's gone back to what it was in about 2003ish. Yes there is some messing about, but it's still a car show. Whereas by the time Clarkson and co came to the end of their run it was pretty much just an entertainment show that happened to have some cars in it.

The Chris Evans season was just truly dire. But I do think it has improved massively in the last two seasons. Like anyone starting a new job, it takes time for them to get used to their colleagues and jell with them. I think that was half the problem to start with it seemed quite forced, but it's got better. They appeared to have ditched Eddie Jordan now, he seems a nice enough bloke, but he just seemed out of place on topgear.

This maybe something along those lines. I think when manufacturers lend out these vehicles they sometimes attach certain conditions to what can and can't be done with them. If the people borrowing them just ignore the conditions then they find it difficult to borrow vehicles in the future, Topgear do have a certain amount of clout when it comes to giving manufacturers publicity but they don't want to ostracise any of them ether.
Rory also appears to have a much smaller part in the show for some reason, and the other two can't drive all 3 cars.

no mate never missed it about Clarkson getting sacked and his mates getting their contracts not renewed. Even with the new line up, The bbc should have just let go, rather than still mess about with the presenter line up.

Ok fare play about them getting the damaged cars homes, but its still two very rare cars, I am not a fan of the marina, not my cup of tea, its more of the fact they chose a very rare car to damage that winds me.
They could have picked a MGB coupe, more of those about etc. As for the pianos been dropped, thats just a waste of a very good instrument. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I did wonder why the Velar was sidelined for part of the piece but think it may have been more down to the logistics of trying to film off road.

The Velar did a pretty large jump in the first part.

Worried for Volvo that the engine mounts on two cars appeared to be made from chocolate.
