It could be any one of a number of things. The only way to narrow it down will be to plug into some diagnostic equipment, e.g. Nanocom. Darren

Hello MJN, I have a 2004 Td5 with ABS and it does the same, ie when I turn the inigition on and start the ABS light remains on constantly and doesn't go off until I drive off. It never goes on and off and on again before I pull off. Cheers Andy

Hi Andy
Are yo unot concerned by this it is quite clear in the handbook that this indicates a fault in the system? |

The Td5 ABS light is supposed to illuminate at start-up and remain on until the vehicle speed exceeds ~5mph. This is because the system check includes the wheel rotation sensors. Until the ECU can see that all wheels are rotating the ABS system check can't complete, so the warning light stays on until it has finished. If the ABS light remains on after exceeding ~5mph then there is a fault condition, which may be caused by one of many components not reporting their status to the ECU. Unless you can see something obviously wrong (like a severed or disconnected cable near the brakes) you'll need to get some diagnostics done to locate the problem.

Hello MJN, well I've now read the handbook and the section on the ABS light. It appears it should blink, but as it's serviced by a specialist independent, passes it's Mot each year and stops just fine I'm not unduely concerned. I've done a little research and it appears there could be an old fault code that needs clearing somewhere but as the light goes out when I get to 5mph all is well

I've always understood it to be the light stays on until 4mph is reached as well, it goes off only then after it has checked the wheel speed sensors.

The abs lamp on my one stays on until I drive above 4 / 5 mph as well, think this is correct. I know my abs certainly works as it activated during the recent snow/ice!

So the question now is does anybody have a TD5 that follows the procedure of the ABS lamp blinking during the start up process?

Thank you Dorsetsmith for taking the time to post that information that is just what we need for trouble shooting.
So the ABS light flashes for 0.3 sec would we notice that has anybody seen this happen? |

I can see mine do it if I've recently cleared all the code faults, well clear the sysyem of faults whether they come up or not. At the moment I have a re-occouring speed sensor fault so it soon stays on untill it goes over the 5mph or so.

I tried some hard braking today on a dry road today the car slewed to the left and it sounded like one of the wheels had locked up.
This I tried several times with the same result The conclusion I come to is just because the ABS lamp is not lit up does not mean the ABS is functioning. |

The latest on the ABS problem is the fault code reader said a wheel sensor fault.
This has now been replaced and apparently the ABS and TC lights come on when the car reaches 60 mph? Has Anybody else experienced this problem. 2016 Defender Landmark 90 2005 Defender CSW TD5 90XS |

I'd be inclined to check and double check wheel bearings all round, make sure all sensor probes are clean and sit in the sockets well, I have a front sensor that can start throwing up faults as it soon tells when the wheel bearing is beginning to need tightening as the sensor casing has a slight crease and as such it probably doesn't sit quite as deep as it should.
