Whistle / squeal from engine bay
Hi all, I’m trying to track down a engine noise which I suspect to be the turbo.

Whilst testing it I have noted that the vehicle will not rev over 3000rpm whilst stationary. Does anyone know why this would be? Is this the case for anyone else?

Cheers

Dave

Not over 3000 rpm suggests limp mode. Do you have an odb2 reader? a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

I do but I haven’t got access to it tomorrow. Thing is it drives fine, apart from the annoying noise. No warning lights

Was just wondering if in the meantime someone could see if theirs revved over 3k when stationary. Someone with no neighbours preferably Smile would be a great help

Tdi4 you’re a legend. I owe you one. I hoped it might be the case as it revved to EXACTLY 3000 rpm.

It doesn’t sound like a belt or pulley but I can’t rule it out. It reminds me a bit like when you blow through a blade of grass to make that whistling sound, almost a bit “reedy”. When driving it only seems to appear as boost builds.

I’ve tightened all the hose clamps. Checked the turbo to manifold fixings, the turbo to exhaust flange bolts, taken the elbow from the turbo off and reseated it. Still no joy.

You’re more than welcome!

Have you checked the bolt and the studs between the exhaust manifold and the turbo? My studs are coming loose and i have a similar sound when they do a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

my TD5 snapped the stud closest to the bulk head and you're describing the exact nose that it used to make when accelerating

Was that the manifold stud?

As I mentioned earlier all the other fixings seem to be tight and i can’t see any “sooting” from anywhere, to make me think a gasket had gone

That reminds me. I had the same problem. Detecting where the noise came from because it only happened when the engine was on “load”. That means driving.

Perhaps you can record the sound? If it’s the whistling type then i strongly suspect the leak to be somewhere in the exhaust system. So somewhere between the exhaust maninfold and the cat. can be a gasket and Or a bolt of stud.

Last resort as i see it. Is to take the bonnet of put the misses on the side wing and drive 80 Miles per hour. Perhaps she can pint point the noise Rolling with laughter a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

I’m not sure if that would cure the whistling, but it might cure the whining noise that happens from the area of the passenger seat

Right, I’ve taken a short video of the noise from the engine to see if anyone can put their finger on it.

The noise is more pronounced and starts earlier on when driving
