Headlights not working
Hi there, hope you guys can help me.
Got a 90 HardTop 2.2 TDCI 2012, and both of my headlights went off yesterday.
I have sidelights and dash lights as normal, regardless of the position of the headlight switch... also got full beam when holding the indicator stalk back.... but not when pushing it forward... prob coz it's linked to the headlights right?
I've checked all the fuses under the steering wheel, and all good. Both headlight bulbs also good.
I've herd about the headlight switch melting problem, so ordered a new one, waiting for it to arrive...
On the main time, I've dismantled the steering column, and the switch looks like brand new... no signs of melting or discolouration in any way or form...
Can you pls tell me if this particular model has a headlight relay fitted? And where would it be located?
It it hasnt got a relay, wound you would it be a good idea to fit one? Easy job? Any directions?
There are 3 relays under the steering wheel, but one is for the wipers, and dont know about the other 2...
Can't see any voltage regulator under the OSF wing near the radio antenna either...
Any ideas/suggestions are highly appreciated!
Many thanks!

You won’t be able to see if the switch has melted unless you take it apart,
If you do, you will find that the contacts have probably got hot, melted the plastic that they sit in, and this causes the contacts to sink Into the hot plastic and not make contact.

9 times out of 10 it’s the switch, closely followed by the stalk!

I had one in at work yesterday that had burnt both headlamp plugs out,
Not come across that one before? Rolling Eyes

Just changed the light switch for a new one... no luck.
Just ordered now a new indicator stalk.
Any other clues about what could be causing this issue pls?
Is there relay for the headlight on this model?
Many thanks

Yes it are weak points.

To prevent this from happening again you should use a relay. I have done this myself and no further problems a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

I think you should test voltage from point to point to ground. Simply use a small 12 V bulb with connected wires. One end connected to the ground (Battery minus). The other end connected step by step to these points. (When possible try it first before the mentioned point and then directly after this point.
1. Light switch
2. Combi-Switch (Side flashers / main beam / horn)
3. Fuses
4. Lamp connectors.

If the bulb illuminates go to the next point, if not, you found the problem. Wink

I think it's the combi switch.
