Dead Sheep
On Tuesday my wife discovered a dead sheep at the bottom of our garden. We do not know who owns it, there are many small farms in the area, and stray sheep are a common sight. She contacted the council who advised her to fill in their on line "dead animal form", which she did. Having not heard anything for a few days I phoned the council and they said they would dispatch someone to collect it today. As it's getting close to the end of the working day and no sign of anyone, I phoned the council again, and they have now told me to ring the police who will come and identify the creature and contact its owner.

I duly phoned 101 and told the cops. Not surprisingly they didn't know what to do about it and I'm now waiting for them to phone back to me, probably to say I should get back onto the council.

Any tips to get this resolved before the local foxes/crows solve the problem for me? I'm not amused at the prospect of this thing slowly decomposing over the weekend. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Obviously, you have no way of locating the owner?

Try calling the local Hunt, they should be willing to come and collect it. Find your local hunt here http://www.mfha.org.uk/pack_directory/

Good luck. James

Keep on to the council, and in this relatively cold weather not much else will happen.
If it was July or something it'd be a different story.

See if there is a Police Farm watch team in your area? If so, take any ear tag numbers if present?
I would imagine Sheep have them, but I'm no expert but somewhere likely will be in a better position to comment.

I do know Sheep can drop dead at a drop of a hat all if a sudden. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I dare say there is a tag, or a coloured blob of paint on it, but how that translates to a farmer I don’t know. I’m not over keen on the idea of rolling it over to check either Thud 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

The council won’t do anything until Monday now anyway. There is a rural police team round here that are always on Facebook. Might try them. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Another option is to call your local NFU office Thumbs Up James

As expected, the police said it's the council's job. What would the NFU be able to do? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

The NFU are generally very helpful in all matters farming and rural. They have local offices that should advise on how best to deal with it. At the very least they may know someone that will deal with it.

Why not offer to drop it off at the reception of the council offices? Shocked Rolling with laughter James

Try contacting the National Sheep Association:

Any dead sheep have to be documented. They should be able to tell you who should deal with this. 110XS CSW TD5.

The council have now categorically stated they wont touch it. I should apparently re-contact the cops and insist they come and identify it so the owner can be contacted to come and collect. If that can't be done I have to pay someone (who????) to come and take it off my hands. It's not helped by the fact that the animal is down a hill where a vehicle can't get near so I can't imagine it'll be an appealing job for someone. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Just phoned them, they said the only thing they can think of is to contact my nearest livestock market with the tag number and see if they can tell me who owns it. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I would contact the environment agency here for advice https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/environment-agency as any dead animal creates a health hazard to the public they have a duty to assist.

It’s a council matter as far as I know, just tell them it’s a health hazard. Last winter over Doncaster way the pikeys where dumping dead horses at the road side and the council eventually shifted them it’s the expense that puts them off

If it is animal that has been managed by a registered farmer it will have a yellow tag in one ear and a white tag in the other ear , on the underside of either of those tags will be a number which is unique to the owners farm . It starts with UK and then should have a six digit number ,(the number on the top of the tag is just a management number) once you have that number trading standards,or the police should be able to contact the owner and take the appropriate action. ( if they can be bothered).
I hope this helps , sorry that you have been left with this mess to deal with.

Nick.
