2008 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Keswick Green
Hi everyone,

So it’s been a while since I last posted. I had a real fight getting the gearbox back on which resulted in me having to take it out completely and as it was coming out I decided to change the clutch at the same time. I found out why the gearbox wouldn’t go back in. The spigot bush is actually a roller bearing and one of the rollers had come out and was stopping the gearbox shaft going into the spigot fully hence it locking up. Anyway that’s all back together and fine. All the earths are now plugged back in which were loose before and the new crank position sensor it fitted. Still having the same issue though. Although it seems to have developed. It was starting eventually but then cutting out as if it had run it of fuel. But there is over a quarter of a tank left. I changed the fuel rail pressure sensor but that didn’t help matters. I’ve done some plots on my diagnostic tool of fuel pressure against revs.

To me this seems to show that the fuel pressure is far too low to keep the engine running but no low fuel pressure faults are being logged. Does anyone have any idea on this or the same plot on a running 2.4tdci? I’m now completely stuck and don’t really know where to go. I think I’ve got to take it to a diesel specialist to have the pressure checked out the pump even though it was brand new less than 12 months ago, but previous experience says this isn’t really anything to trust. Really getting frustrated now as I’ve done less than 30 miles in it since I bought it nearly 4 months ago.

Not sure if this is any use for you, but here it is none the less!

I've looked through some of the logs I've taken with my BAS diagnostics tool and although my readings are in a different unit, converted, at idle, just after startup, my 2.4 is showing around 22000 to 23000kPa which equates to 220 to 230bar respectively.

If I get the chance during the day I'll give it a start and log using the same figures and scales etc, see if makes it a little easier to compare to revs. (Thats if no-one jumps in first)

Hope that helped.

Ben

Great thank you for that. A direct comparison would be brilliant!

This is a plot from the short time when I was able to start mine first turn of the key. This soon stopped and got progressively worse.

Fuel pressures seem similar to as you mentioned. When it started like that it ran beautifully, no issues atall would pull upto speed very well on a short drive ran upto temperature and stayed there.

The lumpy plot before makes me think it could be a fuel pressure regulator. But having changed 3 sensors already based on no fault codes and me just guessing really. I’m sceptical about changing any more. I’ve inspected the wiring look plugs for corrosion but they seem as good as new. I haven’t inspected the wiring loom itself. I think that’ll be my next port of call to remove all the conduit and check the wires.

I’ve contemplated whether this engine has just given up but I’m reluctant to just swap it out as when it runs it’s fine. It must be something small just causing a no start issue.

Without trawling back through the whole thread, can you confirm whether or not you have replaced the VCV?

As a general rule, weird running issues that seem fuel related and don't produce DTCs are generally caused by the VCV. Whilst your symptoms don't fit the classic VCV repertoire, I would certainly try changing it if you haven't already.

Yes VCV has been changed for a genuine Denso item. This didn’t seem to make much difference if any. The pump learn procedures were carried out as required.

Your topic interests me a lot.... sorry to hijack, but I'm hoping to discover it also... with your help maybe

I've been having a similar problem...and your pics on the beggining of this post seem to match the problems I have...

Some times it's hard to start...
other times the glow plug light does not lit and the temperature indicator goes up... see videos below

sometimes it looks like the vehicle starts and then for a split of a second it shuts off and on...

and last when I turn the key to position II right before turning the engine on I hear a ratratratratrat sound from, I think, under the passenger seat (RH) or behind the dash....as in this video - sound on

these two videos we can see some of the problems...

checked the fuses, ignition barrel and switch replaced a couple of months ago... no faults on the scangauge (although I think the scangauge it's not a big deal...never read one error, when I've had some)
going to follow your post and links and try to solve also...starting on the relays Neutral

Just to let you know...

My problem got solved (so far, and it has been 6 months) by just changing the ignition coil and immobiliser relay...because I've replaced both, not sure wich solved the problem, but I'm almost sure It was the ignition coil relay that was causing those problems at start up... Starts well now, whether it's cold or hot!

Didn't get to change the glowplugs! Saved a few € so far...... Regards
Joao
