Ditto to this. As soon as I slow down or stop it takes no time at all for the temperature gauge to fall back to the cold side of the range...

Part of the issue is the lower part of the dash is basically the whole of the piping before it gets to the piddly little vents.

Even a brand new matrix isn't great (have one on the V8 ) and they are a lot warmer running than the td5!

Maybe a diesel heater like Eberspacher?

Back in the dark ages of 200tdi defenders folks had good results from lagging the internal ducting to stop the heat from escaping the enormous bulkhead shaped plenum chamber. Might be worth looking in to.

Apart from that Eberspacher is the way forward. I did see these, thought they might be worth a punt;

My gauge does not move once I stop or slow down, just the heat drops off from the blowers. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I did wonder about those, but would rather have a UK seller than a Chinese one (for warranty etc) for the price though, not bad.

I did read about a flap being open that can get cold air in from the airbox side but not dug much deeper TBH.

Anyone got pics of the ducting or a diagram of the pipe work ? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Yep - just done that - see here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/post689662.html#689662

As that post on the other thread will show it's not something to be taken on lightly. For me at least it was a job with a really high Censored content.

I will say that it definitely does its job though - a significantly increased heat output - and I didn't notice any engine cooling even in the temperatures we have at the moment. Donald

May I humbly suggest a diesel powered cab heater .... this will solve your problems in one hit and have more benefits of heating the cab when parked up at night... just a thought !

My td5 heater is normally fine, in fact very good, however I did notice the temperature gauge struggling whilst crawling to work in traffic early this morning in the colder temperatures/snow, my engine has no under bonnet pad, wonder if that helps things...

Made no difference to my old TD5...

They help keep crud out of the radiator, but as the thermostat will be closed in low temperatures (or should be!) there will be no water flowing through the radiator anyway.

Woeful? Poppycock... It is adequate when dressed correctly...

Besides, follow these simple rules for dress code and you'll make it through to Spring;

Almost correct. But a insolated coverall helps too. Twisted Evil

Fitted heated seats in mine. It's glorious. Do keep looking at a diesel heater in future, but it's a long way down the list!

I am planning on refurbing the seats and heater elements are going in.

Diesel heater has also been on my list.

Does anyone know the correct position for the heater flap on the matrix housing? Do you move it as far is it goes (hear it hitting the insides) then adjust cable to get max movement? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I have the same issue in the 200Tdi, just need more heat! My first V8 hybrid 90 was never short of heat, I'm sure it had a heater exchange from a Range Rover Classic, but can't quite remember. Would this improve cabin heat? Easy job to fit? James

That's just what I did at the weekend. Made sure the flap is fully over to the 'heat' side (air from the duct is being directed to the matrix) and then adjusted the cable to correspond to that. Then check that, as you move the dash control, you get full range of movement of the lever on the heater box.

You can see it working anyway - bonnet up; driver's window open, and you can see the lever on the box moving as you move the dash control up and down. Donald

In my old Defender I replaced the low vents for these:

Installed 2x left and 2x right. This was a big improvement.
