Hi.
I bought my Defender 110 HT in summer 2015. Since the beginning the fuel economy was very good (imho) - 10l/100km - 28mpg. Winch and 265/75R16 tyres. I've made some trips, added A/C, added a full external roll-cage, full under-body protection and the fuel economy dropped a lot. Now it is in the 12-13l/100km (22-24 MPG) at best. I don't think it can be only caused by the extra weight of the roll-cage. Another thing that I have noticed is a strange engine sound especially below 2000rpm - it sounds as the valves were loose but I don't think it can be the case in this engine. ECU shows no errors. Any ideas what could have happened, how to diagnose and how to improve it? Clean the MAF & MAP sensors, this can be done more or less for free and something you can rule out.

The weight of the underbody protection and rollcage won't make much difference. The extra aerodynamic drag however, definitely could!
I gain 3-4mpg by taking my roofrack off. It's just a massive pain and I have nowhere to keep it. |

Interesting thread.
I use about 14l per 100 km whilst driving 120-130 km per hour. I drive a 110 heavily modified it weighs about 2500 kilo with external roll cage And driving with 6 people and lots of lugage Normal city use is about 12 l per 100 km I am intereted what other can get out of a liter of fuel So burgos if you compare your Numbers we are in the same range a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover |

True, we are. The thing is that 2 years ago my car was using 10 litres per 100 km no matter how hard I was pushing it.

same size tyres?
cage, rack, protection all make a difference but not massive unless you pushing on at top end or alot of hard acceleration where the added mass will make some difference, but not 50% Cheers James 110 XS Utility 130 Puma Station wagon/camper (in the making) 90 Puma Hardtop |

Yes, same tyre size, actually the same tyres...
I agree that the roll-cage and under-body shields can make some difference, but not that big. It's a Hard Top and the back of the car is always almost empty. I have 2 beds over there and some plastic boxes with stuff but nothing really heavy. Some people have better results with fully loaded cars... I think I will start with the injectors washers and seals. Is there a kit for this engine or I have to buy separate parts? I guess I would need: Right? Not from main dealers, you have to buy the separate parts, but don't get the washers from Land Rover they're "REALLY" expensive. Get them from a Diesel Injection specialist, they should only be about £1 each. Failing that get them from a Citroen dealer, they're about £7 each, but that's still less than half the price Land Rover charge and a couple of quid cheaper than Ford.
There are some transit kits on ebay for reasonable prices. |

the large seals go in the top of the cam cover, the injectors then go through them. Look under the plastic injector cover on the top of your engine and you can see them.

Ah, ok, so they are LR004650 as shown on https://www.landroverworkshop.com/diagrams...er_44988#8
So, the complete set consists of: 4 x LR004662 Injector washer 4 x LR004650 Injector seal 4 x LR045393 O ring 2 x LR019168 Injector clamp bolt Right? The set in Brit-car, without the bolts arrives to $48.60 +$10.50 for the bolts... I think I will buy the kit from ebay... although I usually avoid buying cheap... I would like to share something with you. There has been an interesting and unexpected development in the topic of my cars economy. Look at the graphs (l/100km and Imperial MPG) below: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The last fueling happened after 390 km on highway - 10l/100km. The second last - 9.2l/100km - 550 km in mountains, which includes a little bit of off-road driving. All previous fuelings that are below 12l/100km are done after driving country roads. Highway - never below 12l. So, what happened at 145500 km? I put into my engine a bottle of Liqui Moly Ceratec. Last oil change happened at 143950 km. I'm personally quite wary with any sort of additives, either fuel or oil additives, because I reckon if they were of any benefit, LR would recommend their use (after all, it's the car manufacturer best interest to get better fuel economy or longevity for their engines)
