United Kingdom 2012 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Sumatra Black
Puma 2.4 or 2.2?
Trying to determine which would be my preferred Puma; either a 2.4 or 2.2.

Could someone please let me know the main differences between them (besides the obvious engine CC and a DPF on the 2.2).

2.2 is a much nicer place to be. drives better and is the choice I made following same thoughts as you

The 2.2 is half the road tax and lovely. Thumbs Up might be biased though and have no experience of the 2.4. James

Had both. Tax is cheaper from 2010 so you can get a 2.4 in the lower bracket. Tiny bit more refined the 2.4 but has the DPF. If a keeper prob less of a concern. If you do good miles then it doesn't really matter. 1951 80" S1 2.0

2.4 is easier to power chip as the 2.2 ECU has to be open up and sent off ,which just takes longer.I purchased a 2.2 as I wanted low miles and as late as possible .

I've had both...2.2 is much nicer in my opinion, can't quite put my finger on it but the 2.2 seems a tad more refined, but, being Land Rovers they're all different. Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

Legin, this is no longer true. The 2.2 can now be remapped without opening the ECU Thumbs Up A local tuner said just today the 2.2 was his favourite as can be made so smooth and powerful. James

2.2 can be remapped through the OBD port using a remote tool available from BAS.
No need to send away or open up the ECU.

I did this on mine (150BHP) before Christmas. Not as cheap as taking it to a specialist to get the remap done, or removing and posting off the ECU, but with does have the added benefit that the vehicle can be set back to STD tune at any time using the same tool. And the tool provides other calibration functionality and error code reading.

I've had both a 2.4 and a 2.2. The 2.4 was a later model with the lower tax.

I would say the more important thing is to find a vehicle that meets your layout and general condition requirements first, rather than limiting choice by deciding on the engine.

I have about 170 BHP untested by alive tune and was told it could not be done via the OBD port ,I did not really like the idea of opening up the ECU because of water and the very fine wiring being damaged,also it took 2 weeks to send off and return.I wanted a hard top,bulk head removed,heated seats and screen and it had to be green with low mileage ,after a year of looking found my 2012 in Santorini Black all the above plus 19,000 miles and it's black ,I was going to have wrapped in Keswick Green but now 3 months on the black not so bad.So really it's about the spec more than the engine.

The ability to remap without opening ECU is relatively new, a few months maybe.

Another tuner (not BAS) described the process as follows...

"You’ve always been able to use obd you just had to patch it by getting the password from the ecu hence opening it.

Now they can calculate the password to unlock via the obd".

My 2007 2.4 is N1 tax. Personally I would choose a 2.4 over a 2.2 any day.
