Fitting Jate rings to front of Defender 90
Would appreciate guidance on where to fit Jate rings to the front of a 57 plate PUMA Defender. The attached photo appears to show two options, one set of pre drilled chassis holes are relatively close to the front (just behind the bumper) and the second set further back in what looks like a purpose built housing? Thanks

Primary purpose is for recovery during light green laning/off roading

Definately in front of all the steering gear. The rear hole is for the steering box and panhard rod mount on LHD you would risk damage to the steering damper in this location Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

For light green laning and off roading then a bumper change might be a bit much. You can get those recovery eyes that bolt through the bumper bolts and bumper. Very neat and easy to access Thumbs Up

There are plenty of options, depends on how much they're likely to be used really Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

on the front Jate rings are a straight swap for the factory towing eyes. Looks like your factory towing eyes are missing, but the holes for them are the forward ones in your photo.

The holes you need should be sleeved on the inside for extra strength and quite near the front!

Personally I have never been a fan of Jate rings and removed them from my ex-MOD 90 straight away.
As already stated, they are mounted quite low and to attach a bridle (shares the load between both chassis legs) you will almost certainly be reaching around in the gloop. Alternatively you could mount the bridle before you venture off the tarmac and leave it ready & waiting.

As for myself I prefer recovery points at bumper height.

^^ I love the retro look of the front of your Defender Thumbs Up

Agree with you absolutely about the JATE rings, they're horrible things. The old-style D-rings such as you have are vastly superior in every respect and look better too, in my opinion.

Your not always bogged to sills and scraping around in the muck to find the rings. If the front is that far bogged is it sensible to continue pulling forwards, Depends on the situation.
I'll accept the JATE isn't a designed out of the box recovery point it has proven to do a good job at it. A lot of 'Lack of forward progress' is caused by cross axle or just purely no traction not always mud up to the door handles.

They are fairly discreet too and work for those with A bar or other mountings in the way.

As above jate rings have there issues, I had them on the rear a few years ago and after a few recoveries my chassis was a mess. Recovery eyes or HD bumper with shackles is the way to go Thumbs Up
