What you are looking a will be a grey coloured surface of the catalysers matrix. Least that was what mine looked like. I was not inclined too proceed in this way and opted for a new decat pipe. This was for a couple of reasons, firstly the ability too return to standard on sale, secondly it’s a really expensive component. I have heard that this method results in a booming type noise, although I cannot confirm! A friend with a V6 Commodore modded 300KW + had a straight pipe inserted through the cat ! Read your post this morning. Reassuringly I chose to take the same approach and am getting a pipe made for all the same reasons.
