New Alpine headunit just unveiled and it looks really nice. What do you think, will it be alright in a Puma??

I can see the screen obscuring most of the controls, especially the hazard light switch, heated screens, etc. Unless the screen was mounted on the passenger side grab rail?

I didn't watch the clip in full, but how much of the added functionality (climate control, etc) that your in effect paying to have integrated actually be redundant?

Dont want to come across all negative, but just failing to see the postives outweighing them Thumbs Up 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

I like the concept but I am afraid it will obscure the hazard, rear wiper/wash buttons etc. as the screen does not retract. It will to all intents and purposes look like the screens on the current range of Merc C classes. The Clarion unit is probably a better option but is a tad expensive.

I like this alot. I think the answer (if possible) would be to cut out the vents (block off the pipes or divert) and pop the unit in there. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Or move all the top-row buttons in place of the current single din location and put this unit above? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Or move all the buttons to the driver's side panel and put in a new fascia with the buttons blanked off, the single din remaining in the same spot. Monsieur Le Grenadier

plus it will be eleventy billion pounds. but you could relocate the switches to the side like the doubledin dash conversions

The sound of all those gears churning around in the gearbox and transfer box is music to my ears. Who needs a radio anyway? Especially one that costs 1,100 bucks Defender 90XS SW

I think you'd still have to install a double-din dash to use this, but then it could look quite nice & with the tilt, be effective.
So I'm prepared to go double-din, but if it's really going to cost £1K+ as suggested, it's way way overpriced considering it mainly just mirrors the phone, and if you're using Carplay, the apps that it will currently use are very limited.

Carplay may gain functionality in time, but I'd be worried if this unit could be updated.

So it's basically a dumb unit with a nice-looking screen, but that screen is also low resolution (480) for it's size.
It also doesn't appear to have wireless connection, which is bonkers considering the price.

I'd be interested if it was around £300.

Read more here, if you're considering using it for iPhone:

If £1100, consider this - you could buy 3 iPads for that!
Shame, because it could have been good.

The Puma dash is a difficult one. I don't really feel you get a good enough view of a double din unit. Thinking about it, this is probably no better.
It's a lot of money.
I don't know if having a permanently installed iPad would be any better. It would require too much fiddling to be useful I think. I don't know, the solution to the problem is probably another couple of years away unfortunately.

Hello dantastic

I have the Kenwood 526DVD Single Din Unit with the similar 'deployed' screen function.

It works (obviously) within the standard Single Din Puma Dash, and whilst Yes the visibility of some
buttons are lost, heated front and rear windows, hazard warning, and rear wiper, in may case,
these buttons can be activated 'blind' if the screen position is adjusted to allow this...Not ideal, but
not a 'killer' for the concept IMO, as the fold out screen more than compensates for this.

Screen Adjustment
This will be model specific, but on this Kenwood it can be set (to the mm / angle) exactly where you want
it to 'park' when deployed. You can also, with one button, (3 seconds) send the screen back into the unit,
maintaining what ever you have running, until the vehicle is switched off, bring the screen out again and
you are visually back where you started.

For me I have 3 'Must have Mods' on my Defender, Small (removable) Steering Wheel, Sun Roof and Sat Nav'.

A Mod (for me) is really a good one if after living with it, you would do exactly the same again and the 'fold out'
Single Din Units, for the money, ease of install, and size of Screen for Sat Nav' is worth serious consideration IMO.

I recently got the single din pioneer fold out car play unit and it suits the defender very well. In fact pioneer use a defender on their advert!

The alpine seems like an odd choice to me, can't really see the attraction. My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html
