2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Stornoway Grey
Diff's
Bit bored with the defender after scrapping the ls3 project having been disappointed actually driving one...

For 90% road use what's the best option when it comes to diff's?

Don't need too but just to give me something to do.. i plan to overhaul the engine and gearbox mounts next time im home and fancy changing the diff's,

would probably do center and rear? any opinions Question

I've got centre and am planning front followed by rear.

A 90 under power will understeer with relative ease on sharper bends, a front diff would help to reduce that. Rear would make it worse, both would be pretty impressive I'd say.

The centre diff on mine definately makes it more stable, especially in high speed braking. And there is obviously more traction out of bends. I would start with the centre personally Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Scrapped the LS idea?

Why, if you don't mind me asking.... I actually rang a member on here on Saturday, who had kindly agreed to speak to me about 'real world' ownership of an LS 90.

I'm eager to get as much info as possible, as it seems those that have the conversion go quiet, or sell on quickly.

I've got an Xcess 4x4 Pegged Ashcroft ATB in the back of my 110, on the road barely notice it bar braking feels more "stable" lol, brilliant off road as well. Lock the center diff and becomes a little more fun Laughing

Wasnt bad on price either.

After speaking to Nige about various diffs he said front ATBs are also good though can cause it to self center with a bit more force but apparently easy to get used to. That or 4 Pin open front both come in at the same price from him.

Uprated/4Pin center diff, unless you do a lot of off roading I wouldn't bother, unless you want an ATB which would work nicely with an ATB rear.

Anybody know of anywhere trustworthy to install a set of atb’s in the northern half?

I’m going to go for a front and rear set, spoke to excess4x4 but they are the other end of the country..

Unsure if I’ll get Ashcroft or qualife yet but prefer to outsource the fitting...

Xcess 4x4 do ship I believe. Imo much higher quality than Ashcroft.

Rear diffs are super easy to fit, only need basic tools and takes maybe an hour first time round.

Front is a little more time consuming but its still just undoing nuts and bolts.

Wheels off, I think 16 bolts on the front, behind the hubs. Then 16 or so more round the diff itself + 4 on the prop shaft.

Rear - Wheels off, 5 bolts on the drive flanges, pull em out, 4 bolts on the the prop and round the diff again

Refit with RTV sealant round the diffs and ideally use new nuts and bolts all round.

Probably get it all done in half a day.

G, It is indeed for the 90.... Current set up, Quaife ATB rear with Ashcroft front & centre ATB. Absolutely superb!
