Relay Mounting
Hi All,
Having had headlamp problems I have ordered and received new column switches and a Boomslanger wiring loom.

This is the relay block :

Any tips on how to mount this to the vehicle, I assumed there would be some sort of mounting bracket to take a screw? As there isn’t would cable-tying it to a suitable object/part in the engine bay be ok?

Thanks,

Hi,

I'd ask them if they could provide mounting brackets (or maybe you could buy them separately somewhere?)
https://www.autosparks.co.uk/standard-12-v...20amp.html

Other solutions would have been housings or relays with integrated brackets:
https://www.autosparks.co.uk/relay-housing...relay.html
https://www.autosparks.co.uk/standard-12-volt-relay-30-amp.html

Not sure if cable ties provide enough "grip" to hold the relays under vibration.

Thanks for the links Macfrank.

I would have thought that the relay holders/connection blocks would have had a mounting system of some sort, the relays themselves have got mounting slots for the bent metal type holder but this can’t be the way to mount these as any vibrations would tend to loosen the relatively heavy connection block. I’ll have a look and see what I can find on the interweb. 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black.

l bought same loom a little while ago, same then they didn't supply a mounting bracket, it wasn't hard to make one up but thought it a little cheapskate! might be worth anyone ordering one going forward they ask for one at tine of order up front as it doesnt appear to be a one off!

Why not just un-pin the connections, replace connector blocks for vertical surface mount ones?

Easier than making tabs, and can allow you to remove Relay with mount in situ rather than having a trailing socket.

This is why I like Durite, I like the mounting tabs present and they have flying sockets inc.

Your other option would be replace the Relays with new ones with mounting tabs. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

Spoke to Paddocks, they say no one has ever asked about this before! They are contacting the manufacturers to find out what they recommend.

In the meantime, I’ve had a rummage around my “spares” box and come across a small Schneider 65 x 65 x 35mm ip55 electrical box, this fits the relays + bases perfectly so if nothing better turns up I’ll give it a try.

I don’t really want to start breaking down the loom, rather defeats the object of buying it in the first place, they’ve sold enough of these over the years so it can’t be an insoluble problem. 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black.

I fitted a boomslang loom a few weeks ago and found the same problem.
Luckily I had a spare relay holder bracket lying around.
Fitted mine in behind the nearside headlamp and ran the loom across the front behind the grill.
Then used the alternator for supply. Defender Td5 Commercial 2002

Hi Baz,

I was thinking of going back to the battery, is there any advantage to using the alternator other than ease of cable run? 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black.

Me too on the mounting bracket. Currently using the Power steering fluid bracket. It is one of those meaning to get round to jobs of finding bracket that slides into the slots on the connectors. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

Get these relay holders from eBay, and then just make up a retaining bracket out of a piece of scrap metal to fix them too or just bolt them somewhere in the engine bay. £2.60 for five.

It has always annoyed me that despite literally years of searching I have never been able to find an after-market supplier of preformed metal strip mounting brackets for these relays, by which I mean strips like those welded in the seatbox of the Puma with a row of tabs on them.

Some years ago I managed to buy a 5-relay bracket which I believe was a Classic RR part, but given that it is a simple thing to make I don't know why no-one seems to make such a thing. Landrover must buy the stampings from somewhere to spot-weld into the seatboxes, but they don't have a separate part number.

Frustrating, and perhaps an opportunity for an enterprising entrepreneur.

I don't like the individual brackets because they are a hassle if you want a row, and look un-original.

Hi Gilarion,

Problem (I see) with these is that the Boomslang kit comes with rather chunky relay holders/connection blocks so using this type of holder means that the relay blades are carrying the weight/stress of the holders/connectors and wiring. If wiring without the Boomslang kit and connecting direct to the relays then they would be ideal. 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black.

Totally agree I have spent hours over the years searching for multiple relay holders. These are the closest I have come and are from an old Volvo.
