TD5 Headlight fun
Today I have been having to work on my Boss's 90.

He has LED headlights and the dipped beam keeps turning off.

I swapped the main headlight switch a few weeks back, and that didn't change anything. The fault is intermittant (the best kind).

So I went out with a multimeter and...

Engine Running lights on dipped,
Headlights = 8V
Fuse = 8V

Engine off but ign on,
Headlights = 8V
Fuse = 8V

Not enough to run the 12v for the headlights so hence the failure. The LED was fitted as the headlights were crap hmm.

Not with the engine running I took the Relay out for main beam that sits in the fuse box, then
Headlights 13V
Fuse 13V

Put relay back in and I am still getting 13V. Now could the relay be at fault...could it be sticking?

Could be a relay fault, but also worth checking earth points as well Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Even when it was only putting out 8V the earth was still good to the chassis. The Fuse was tested but earthing to the shield so again that seems OK. I think it may have a moused wire in there and I can't find it yet.

Sounds like dirty/corroded relay contacts to me. Are the lights better now ?

They work now, but the fault was intermittent but a shaking of wires etc hasn't caused it to fail yet.

I have also bypassed the DimDip relay just incase that is having issues as well.
