South Africa 2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Alaska White
On Board Fire - Alerted by 10 AS
Recently while driving on rough and corrugated roads in Mozambique I suddenly had my alarm activate along with flashing lights on the dash (can't tell you which ones). Very odd I thought and them my passenger said " i smell burning" - then I knew it was something in the battery compartment under the seat. I stopped "pronto" and sure enough there was smoke coming from the passenger side battery box.

So the reason was ..... I had put some emergency / spare oil in the box .... moved the metal wheel chock on top and with the corrugations, it was resting on the positive terminal and the battery hold down screw. The terminal was insulated but not enough to prevent a short. so much that it melted the battery hold down screw! note there was never a direct contact with the positive post of the battery - I believe if so this would have been a much more tragic story. This also caused the oil to "smoulder" hence the double warning from the 10 AS and the smoke from the oil.

The vehicle in perfect operation thereafter with a slightly melted battery case. - no acid leak!
