I have a Uniden UBC125XLT brilliant bit of kit, made even better if you get the programming software to enable you to program and control it from a PC

Oh yes there's certainly a lot to read
I have my scanner sat on my desk at work, it's always on  I can listen to the aircraft coming into the local airport as well as Brize Norton, Kemble and Fairford, the local hospital porters and a chap in a crane on a local building site 
I've always had a interest in radio in general and in fact I've just bought a new CB radio.... |

Brilliant. Bet there’s the occasional choice language from the Crane Op. It’s my brother in law who has stimulated my interest in amateur radio. He has an extensive kit and specialises in period military radio. He lives quite a distance from me on Scottish West Coast. I’m visiting soon to find out more. By the way, he’s a long time defender owner. He bought his 300tdi hard top 90 brand new. The dealer order form specified the 200 engine but as it was just at the change over, it was the 300 that finally arrived for him. Last time I saw it was a year ago and it had over 375,000 miles on it!
Which CB did you go for? My OCD and my wallet are currently in conflict between the Grant II Premier and a Thunderpole T2000. |

Your BIL Defender sounds great, get photos when you visit a chap I know is into the Radio Ham thing, and seems to know a bit about Military radio equipment and the way it was mounted and operated in Land Rovers.
I got my CB out of the drawer a couple of months ago, some chap who is borrowing a bit of my space is rebuilding a rusty wreck of a Chevy said "I'm gonna get me one of those CB's.... it would suit this car". My old 27/81 40ch Cybernet worked pretty much straight away, although there didn't seem to be too many people on the air.... I spent hours trawling the online CB shops, but then got a little luck on a lightly used President Grant 2 Premium, great radio but probably a bit advanced for me....... Is there much to "scan" thesedays?
I have CB in my 110. and a group of us use PMR's (analogue), which you can pick up other domestic users (and some farmers/parachutists from Netheravon and a few others). I've got an Intec MT5050 which (unlocked) scans all sorts of frequencies, plenty that I'm not allowed to transmit on (I've only got my marine VHF cert, somewhere...) But a lot of professional users use the business spec PMR's or digital (as in, police spec radios... certainly the range staff on SPTA use them), so I wonder what we can listen in to? I'm interested too, love earwigging! |

I have a Intek Mt-5050 PMR, seems to be an OK radio but it's certainly no "scanner" in the sense of listening to aircraft etc, you might want to look at the Boafeng radios, Chinese stuff but quite good but again not really a scanner.....
I bought the Intek in the hope that I might be able to hear the other side of "crane mans" conversation.... sadly not Gone are the days of being able to listen to the Police and mobile phones  |

Yes "scanner" was the wrong word to use really, although as you know it has a scan function just to go through all the channels.
I get quite a few operators transmitting on the first few specialised frequencies, but not much else. slightly off topic. we've got a few Kenwood unlicenced PMR's, and damn they're good. basic but a helluva range (compared to the "high power" ahem, if someone had accidentally snipped the links off) Intek 5050's and good quality sound. |

Another vote for the Uniden. For home use, Icom R7000 and in car a quad band radio that covers air band and upto 500mhz. and yup, I'm a Defender owner with a 2E0 call sign

I use an Icom IC-R20 at airshows, and as a general scanner...
It has dual receive, very useful for listening to civil air traffic, and also the military bands, ie, Red Arrows during their display, and audio recording... Modes are SSB (U + L), FM narrow, FM wide (broadcast), AM, CW (Morse)... It's now been dropped by Icom in favor of the IC-R30... pretty much the same but offers digital decoding...
