what’s the gritting like in your area on the back roads ? Kirklees and Calderdale cut a lot of routes off this winter

Personally, I think we should all fit winter tyres. "Grit" is horrible stuff and ruins everything that it comes into contact with. I wonder if we made winter tyres compulsory, we could then stop spreading grit. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

I also think winter tyres should be compulsory. They are good for more than just snow

That’s a good and fair point which I would agree with as I know from personal use they do work and speaking to my lads girlfriend who own a tyre shop are becoming more popular.
But what about other road users like the 2 wheeled variety. |

We had a letter from the local council a few weeks ago, saying that our small village will no longer be gritted in bad weather.
Apparently it falls into a low priority area, We are in a valley, the only way in or out, are up reasonably steep hills, Which when it does snow, leaves a few stranded cars laying around, What annoys me the most, is out council tax is one of the highest bands in the county! Seems we keep giving, and they keep taking 
We have now had a flyer through the door, where local villagers are calling 4x4 owners to step in and help out by keeping the roads clear, I know this is all well and good, and community spirited, but it's been well documented on here that doing a good deed In the snow/bad weather can quickly backfire when it all goes belly up and someone wants to make a claim against you. Our roads are in a shocking state too, I just can't see anything getting any better anytime soon? Which does concern me  80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Isn't it funny how all the people trying to tax 4x4 vehicles off the road a few years ago, are now asking us for help!!! Offer me a road tax reduction and I may be persuaded to help!! 2006 TD5110 station wagon

One of the biggest problem with winter driving is the intelligence of drivers!
Not far from here is a hill in a 30mph zone called Windy Bank, relatively steep, mainly narrow so no centre line, dry stone walls either side and bends. Not a main route so not high on the gritting list. Can reasonably easy be bypassed. Local FB is full of people complaining it is not gritted, the number of accidents on it. The council puts a road close notice at the top. Police vehicle parked at top with do not pass sign flashing. Guess what? Yes people just drive around them. Guess what yes they do not make it! 5-10 minutes to drive long way round or how much longer and how many £££s does a bent vehicle cost! These 'intelligent' drivers obviously know better then the police or council! Brendan |

In the MCN the other week there was mention of winter tyre development for motorcycles. I will definately be getting a pair for mine when they become available as I ride all year round 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Knowing the insurance they would find out
We went over the kirkston Pass when it was closed due to snow the Bobby at the bottom said at your own risk you won’t be recovered or insured but it wasn’t my Defender and I wasn’t driving so wasn’t bothered  |

A work mate puts winter tyres on his euro box every year. These are shod on steel rims rather than his hallowed alloys. He swears by them.
He informs his insurance company when they go on and when they come off. Makes no difference to his insurance, but they insist on sending him a new updated certificate of insurance each time he changes. The problem with winter tyres is they are a bit like space savers. If you don't understand them, don't fit them (as I was overtaken at 74mph with a car that I had seen fitted with a space saver). Lord help us !! Gritting seems good in Norfolk. Side roads not done. But not expecting them to be done. As always, the trunk roads gritting is controlled by the highways agency whereas the other roads are the local council (even though they are the same staff and the same gritters). But us in Norfolk have not seen the snow that the rest of the country have been blessed / cursed* with. * Delete as applicable |

Went to a new customer that’s moved from your neck of the woods this summer up to Windy Bank Heartshead near Brighouse
think she’s going to find it tough going as it’s a bleak spot |

Braver man than me. First time I recced Chamonix was by bike in Dec. Had to 'get outta dodge' and back to the UK when snow was forecast the next day. But leaving the valley on slightly icey, slightly dewy tarmac was a buttock clenching experience. Bone dry and cold, no problem, anything less than that, four wheels only. Stick your head out of the window with your lid on to get that 'in the air' experience  Monsieur Le Grenadier
