Rolling with laughter it's not the same though! To be honest ice isn't fun in anything and is best avoided. I've got a picture somewhere of my bike in 6 inches of snow in the Pyrenees. That wasa bit of a surprise in late May Laughing 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Had the same here in June about 7 years ago. Seat covered in a good couple of inches. All gone by mid morning. Here its less about grit ( which is normally only added to permanently snow covered driveways etc, but more about clearing and salt. We've had a metre over the past 48hrs, but this is the current state of the road.

Not bad and is achieved by division of assets. Big trucks do main road ploughing and salting whilst residents 4x4s do local roads. Couple of nice Defs included. Will try and take a pick of the nice DC with quadruple chain set up. Thumbs Up No doubt the UKs HSE would prevent any GenPop from driving the roads with a plough attachment. Better that a privately insured vehicle wipes out a bunch of kids on the way to school because of bad roads than a local builder or farmer hired by the council and under their insurance. Big Cry

Backed up by lots of heavy plant moving piles from A to B.

And they Keep at it 24/7. Throw loads of equipment at the task early and don't stop until finished.

The pavements on the other hand, ripe for some compensation litigation Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

Talking of pavements, a company I was involved with in Norway sold shoes and boots called Ice Bugs, and the locals swore by them. They worked on the same principle as studded tyres!

The problem with winter tyres is they are a bit like space savers. If you don't understand them, don't fit them (as I was overtaken at 74mph with a car that I had seen fitted with a space saver). Lord help us !!

I know it off topic .............During the summer and a trip to Plymouth I hire a Jeep Grand Cherokee ( yes I know) Rolling Eyes I had a puncture and found the key for the locking wheel nut s was missing, The hire co sent the AA who changed the wheel, the space saver was marked "Max speed 70 M.P.H." which shocked me as I thought it was max 50 mph. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Personally, I think we should all fit winter tyres. "Grit" is horrible stuff and ruins everything that it comes into contact with. I wonder if we made winter tyres compulsory, we could then stop spreading grit.

Totally agree. It's a win-win for the government:
+ If winter tyres were made mandatory from (say) November to March then the sale of those tyres would be a big boost for the economy from VAT, employment and generate the need for tyre storage services for those who don't have the space to do so at home.

+ There would no longer be the need to salt/grit roads, so there would be savings made from materials import and storage. The spreading vehicles wouldn't need to be purchased, stored & maintained.

+ The country would no longer grind to a halt after the merest sprinkling of snow so the man-hours lost from transport issues could be spent more productively.

+ Accident/Emergency & hospital services would be less stretched by road incident casualties.

+ Insurance payouts would fall, thus making it possible for premiums to follow.
The only downside I can see from a government perspective is that imports would increase (most tyres are made outside the UK), but in future they'll be free to add duty to that as desired.

Is this not blindingly obvious? Or have I missed something?

Perhaps its just a conspiracy to make Land Rovers dissolve...

Well, we here in Switzerland virtually all use winter tires. And our streets generally are cleared from snow very quickly and very thoroughly, but gritting can not be avoided. Winter tires can perfectly cope with fresh snow, packed snow, slushy snow, hard rain, etc. but not really with icy conditions. Nothing really does miracles on icy roads, except for studded winter tires, but those are illegal to use on public roads in most European countries (except some Nordic countries), so gritting is a sore here to stay.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Just to wrap up what started this thread.
Crashed on Friday, cheap second hand bits off eBay ordered and other than a bumper grill not arrived yet it's back on the road on Wednesday.

£215 and a bit of my time, a bit cheaper than garage rates but the panels aren't perfect with a bit of rust on the wing and a couple of stone chips on the bonnet. She'll probably crash it again next month anyway Rolling with laughter Ray

Polo Whistle but yeah, when we informed them they told her that she had a £750 excess (she thought it was £350 Rolling Eyes ) and that it would be a write off and after excess deduction she'd get about £50 back Rolling Eyes so it ended up being worth fixing myself. Ray

Saw my first Velar last week and I must say if I went into Eurobox JLR territory and it had to have a green oval rather than big-cat logo, I think a fully loaded Velar would be the way... Monsieur Le Grenadier
