td5 making tapping noise, stops when pedal lifted
can anyone suggest what is causing a kind of tapping or light hammering sound when accelerating but seems to go when i go faster about 50mph, sounds like an injector but there is absolutely no smoke out of exhaust no matter how hard i rev it under load or in neutral, as soon as i back off throttle the noise stops,
even if i go down a steep bank and drop a gear and let clutch out there is no sound, only when i press accelerator pedal,,
so im thinking it cant be an engine bearing, put new injector harness in and no change,, so if an injector had wrong clearance would it tapp with engine revs and not smoke? im at a loose end as it seems to start the tapping noise even if i just tickle the accelerator under load,, but in neutral it ticks over lovely and quiet and cant hear any tapping even when revving???

Could be a warped exhaust manifold.
Do a search and you will find many articles on this. 2002 110 TD5 White

no dont think it could be that as that makes a high pitched screeming noise,, this is as discribed, tapping light hammering south that stops as soon as accelerator pedal in lifted, im thinking fueling system like injector or summit, seems strange it stops as soon as pedal lifted,,,

Could be your crank pulley on the way out. Does the engine make a chirp noise when you switch it off? Ray

yeah just for a split second, ive had a aux belt pulley collapse about a month ago.. it may have put undue stresses on crank pully damper,, but would that cause tapping noise? and would it stop when accelerator lifted off?

I had what sounded like a marble rattling around when under load and a vibration at higher speeds which somehow(not sure how to be honest) is caused by the rubber vibration damper on the crank pulley starting to give up, luckily after a lot of frustration and searching for quite a while I found a perfect how to on discovery2 site that described my symptoms perfectly.

Have a read of this and see what you think Thumbs Up

Hope it helps. Ray

thanks mk1 collector, will have a read, i had a marble sound just before my aux belt idler pulley collapsed, this is different noise, goes up with revs its like a rythmic tapping sound then stops when accelerator is shut,
but it could still be what you have said as tensioners and pulleys can make some crazy sounds,, idler pulley sounded like a piston was hammering into something but was just an aux belt pulley,

i will give it a go,, tried to get under today and do a visual check but cant see nothing with the fan in place, stuck my rachet handle at rear of pulley wheel and tried prying it apart to check for play, wheel moved a tiny amount with medium force,, going to remove fan and have a proper look

Mine didn't look damaged in any way and pulling on it didn't seem too loose but when tried next to a new one you could tell the difference. Ray

Apparently it's best to get genuine or oem but I can't remember how much it cost to fit as it was a good while back. Ray

cheers lads. does anyone know if it would be safe to remove my aux belt and drive up and down my street slowly to see if its making noise without belt,
its sub zero out there,, i realise waterpump runs off aux belt, was just curious as it takes 2 minits to remove aux belt but crank pulley is a bit more graft anyone ever ran there td5 without aux belt short test before?

Short run - like 1 minute or less is OK, not more, and only with cold engine. But be aware - no power steering and no power for brakes - after 2-3 brakes you will be out of vacuum for brake servo. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
