first post - tyre and wheel help
Hi everyone,

Im looking for some advice please.

Im currently modifying a 90 defender truck. It is a 92 reg and is completely standard.

Ive ordered a full gwyn lewis challenge setup with 2 inch lift and am currently deciding on wheels and tyres.

I ordered these off ebay for £350 in red without thinking too much http://www.lrparts.net/1947defendmb-kahn-d...wheel.html I only ordered as i need red wheels to contrast with my company logo Smile

9 x 16 with a -15 offset


Im now wondering if they are suitable as the kahn website says on and off road use in the heading with a contradictory disclaimer saying not for off road use on another page.


If they are suitable id be open to suggestions on tyres. Its a limited use vehicle, used for towing an excavator on road, forestry work and maybe a bit of off roading.

Any help gladly received before i make another bad choice

Ive been looking at the maxiss trepador but heard not much use on road, so I thought STT Pros maybe.

I would say unless you have extended arches then -15 offset will stick out too far 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Depends on the Tyres. I had 285/75/16 on 16x8 ET0 and they were just about flush with the arches.

The maths says a 255 tyre on an ET-15 should therefore fit.

I'm runnin 35/12.5/15 now on ET-33 so defn need the extended arches Smile

This probably isn't the advice you want to hear.
If you tow an excavator on road regularly with a 90, I guess the trailer isn't light, then a different vehicle set up may be more suitable.

Suspension - The Gwyn Lewis challenge kit is very good for extreme off road and competition use, but it won't improve the handling and stability on road over a well maintained standard set up. Standard Landrover suspension is designed to carry loads and tow trailers.

Big wheels, large offsets and extreme tyres (Trepador's) are also not going to do anything for the on road handling. This is all well and fine for competition vehicle, or play thing, but again I wouldn't recommend any of those to tow trailers.
Kahn wheels? If they can't decide if they're suitable for off road use or not, they're probably best avoided - like all things Kahn Rolling Eyes
Don't go too big on tyres they will affect the gearing too.

The image of a standard truck probably isn't what you want, but may be more suitable for it's job.

I may have got a bit carried away with it all Smile. I think I may have to buy a tow bar for the wifes barbarian and just have the defender as a toy. Unless I can convince the wife to have a 110 truck.

Kahn have issued an email saying its a standard print on all web pages and the wheels are suitable for off road use.

I will avoid trepadors as Im keen for some on road use. Gwyn has said on road performance will not suffer with his kit.

will 265 / 75 / 16 be ok with 2 inch wider arches to accomodate the -15 offset or should i be looking for something smaller

BF Goodrich recommended rim width is 7 to 8" for a 265/75/16 AT-KO2 tyre.
285/75/16 would be OK on 9", recommend width is 7.5 to 9"
Different manufacturers and tread types may vary a bit.

Sorry, I can't comment on wider arches, not used them.

Almost all of the wider arch kits will require you to drill half a dozen holes in each wing to take the mounting screws.
The most popular ones tend to the Terrafirma +50mm plastic arches (£150+/-) although there are cheaper fibreglass versions.
Above that price range are the 'Spectre' style ones but you're looking at £5-600 quid.

i dont think i can justify 600 on a wheel arch kit Smile.

thanks for the input on tyres, i need to get some asap now.

Am i best going for a 75 or 85 though?????

I'd rather change my wheel deisgn tat fit extended arches, I personally can't stand the look of them
