Defender TD5 Diff Lock Positions
Evening All,

Ive been looking into my diff lock light and diff lock. It seems at switch was faulty and the lock is working through jacking up the front wheel etc.

However ive been looking online at this topic and it seems there are 3 positions for the lock, looking down onto the plate from the drivers footwell:

Plate towards the drivers door = diff lock
Plate pointing towards the front of the LR = diff unlocked.
Plate can also be pointing toward the passenger side. diff also unlocked.

Now my question is, even with the linkage adjusted spot on, there is no way to select the notch pointing towards the passenger side, it will not throw the linkage close enough to the gearbox. it can be pushed in by hand but the linkage plate will start to catch on one of the 3 bolts ontop of the transfer box.

I had always assumed the 3 positions were diff locked, diff neutral and diff open.

It has been driving around fine in the diff neutral position, the diff is definitely not locked.

Any ideas?

I'll try to post some photos, in the meantime commence head scratching lol

There are only two states for the diff - locked or open.

There are three positions for the transfer box - high, low and neutral. Darren

I know there are 3 positions for the ratios, and the diff lock can either be open or closed, it is just strange that there is an 3rd position on the box itself that is inaccessible on my machine, as in when you have the lever to the left it is in the most right hand position on the box. then when you have the lever in the middle position. i.e neutral it is in the centre position on the box. then right hand side for the lever is left hand side on the box. diff open.

There is a video some where if a bloke changing it with a spanner..... 2 secs

Only two positions, locked and unlocked, "neutral" is meaningless and the bloke in the video doesn't seem to know his arse from his elbow!

If you take it apart you'll see how simple the mechanism is and how absurd the idea of neutral on a diff is Rolling with laughter

I did have a little look down the switch hole, you can see what the lever is doing, its strange the empty slot is exactly the same feel as the locked position on the ball detent, like a solid positive click

Aye the transfer box neutral works fine, as I do have and use a PTO

There are only 2 notches for the detent ball in the difflock selector shaft. I suppose it is possible you're moving the shaft further than its normal travel and feeling it pass beyond the detent.

Good enough for me! haha

also, any reason there is a switch on my pto linkage? it is fed 12v and is closed when the pto is engaged. doesnt seem to light anything though, the switch was broken in closed, but now it is working again although i havent noticed any difference

I imagine it was a warning light or possibly some kind of lock-out to prevent something from happening with the pto engaged. Hard to say without knowing what the pto was originally used for.

Used for my winch and tool take offs, doesn't seem to make any odds, I'll add it to the 'f knows' pile

You'd have to follow the wire from the switch to see where it goes. I think on some vans with a PTO when you engage the PTO, the idle speed increases, could have been something do with that.
