I was thinking about fabbing up some brackets to mount my license plate like above, however I was wondering if anyone knew or had a link to the guidelines for location/visibility? There are plenty of rules around the design and construction of the actual plate. But providing the actual plate is an approved one you can put it where every you like on the front of the car so long as it's more or less vertical and visible from the front of the car. The rules are basically the same for the rear but they have to be illuminated at night.

I keep pondering ways of mounting mine on one of the bulkhead flaps, I really don't like it on the front bumper!

Tbh you only really need a front plate for the MOT i never had one on my 90, never had a problem. I was pulled over twice for other reasons and the police never mentioned it.
That said i kept it in the boot, if anyone said anything "it just fell off, im going to buy cable ties" Think about hoe many super cars havnt got one! Last edited by bankz5152 on 17th Nov 2017 11:02am. Edited 1 time in total |

Hardly the same thing... Think of 458s, P1s, 918s and such they rarely have front plates, some dont even have mounting points for them... As I said ive been pulled twice before, (they thought my 90 was stolen, second time wax tax hadnt updated on the system) didnt have a front plate, they didnt even mention it. Just that they liked my 90. |

We will agree to disagree, they never have them on press photos but have seen all of them with UK front numberplates.

P1 definitely has them at the front as my old CEO had one

There is a bit more detail in the legislation than that. They say that the plate must be visible from the 'relevant area', which is a diamond shape at ground level with one corner under the centre of the plate and the diagonal leading away from it in line with the vehicle. The length of the diagonal, and hence the size of the relevant area, is determined by the size of lettering on the plate but for most regular vehicles will be 22m. The implication is that the plate should be visible when standing anywhere within that diamond shape. However, what it doesn't do is define any viewing height, which still leaves a grey area. On the Bowler, for instance, if you stand within a couple of meters of the front then that plate below the bumper wouldn't be visible but might be if you knelt down. Unfortunately, there are lots of instances like this in the various rules that govern cars, where there are some specifics defined but not enough to provide a complete answer. My 90 is currently in the Land Rover bodyshop and I asked them to put the front plate onto the Bowler steering guard
They said they were happy to do it, so if it was illegal, I'm sure they would have refused Mind you, they are not driving it |

Kit. This para is the one that you need to be aware of,
(3) This paragraph requires the plate to be fixed— (a) vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable. It is not a case of you prefer to put it but what is legally required. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.
