Scania trucks used to come with a sturdy bracket for under bumper fitting. I bet the Scania parts still have them.

But providing the actual plate is an approved one you can put it where every you like on the front of the car so long as it's more or less vertical and visible from the front of the car.
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/56...561_en.pdf

There is a bit more detail in the legislation than that. They say that the plate must be visible from the 'relevant area', which is a diamond shape at ground level with one corner under the centre of the plate and the diagonal leading away from it in line with the vehicle. The length of the diagonal, and hence the size of the relevant area, is determined by the size of lettering on the plate but for most regular vehicles will be 22m.

The implication is that the plate should be visible when standing anywhere within that diamond shape. However, what it doesn't do is define any viewing height, which still leaves a grey area. On the Bowler, for instance, if you stand within a couple of meters of the front then that plate below the bumper wouldn't be visible but might be if you knelt down.

Unfortunately, there are lots of instances like this in the various rules that govern cars, where there are some specifics defined but not enough to provide a complete answer.

I would stick with my original statement, so long as it's reasonably vertical and visible from the front of the car i can't see any traffic police drawing diamonds on the floor to check. The reason there is no height is because it would depend on the viewers height. I mean if you put it on the bulkhead then laid on the floor in front of the bumper you're not going to see it. But common sense dictates humans have the ability to stand up and look down. Screwing it flat to the top of the bonnet is basically a no no.

Kit. This para is the one that you need to be aware of,

(3) This paragraph requires the plate to be fixed (a) vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable.

It is not a case of you prefer to put it but what is legally required.

Maybe I should give Bowler a call and ask them if that's their approved location for the license plate, i've got to ask them a couple of things about the Bulldog anyway. 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Aluminium strip bar from Wickes is very useful for making brackets up.
Easy to bend, work and drill.
And you can either bolt or use adhesive, or as I prefer, outdoor Velcro and a couple of bolts. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

Of course not. As with so many of these things, the chances of anybody actually checking are slim to none but the regulations do provide more detail for those that are interested. Darren

I seem to recall there was a height restriction for front number plates for cars but this was not included when the regulations were re written in 2001. I have never known anyone being prosecuted for an offence where the number plate was reasonably visible only for failing to have one, having re arranges the spacing, colouring in a fixing screw to make it look like a full stop or having pre 1973 black and silver plates on a later vehicle. I also think you could argue that placing your plate on the front grill would effect the running fo the vehicle and so it couldn't be considered a reasonable vertical surface.

Some years ago I had a Series 2 that had a 90 front end and the number plate on the front of the bonnet. The local police didn’t like that too much. I was pulled over for something else and one officer commented .. “.. and sort out your front number plate. What do you think I’m driving? A Censored helicopter?”. Needless to say it remained like this until I sold it.

I never used to have one...motorbikes don't need one.

However that was before NPR cars, even going to a shoot on Boxing Day, there was an unmarked BMW parked in Leek with an NPR camera discretely fitted on the rear bumper.

It's easier to just have one.

Mine is on the front of the cage above the windscreen; vertical and less likely to get caked in mud or knocked off when of road.

I've not had any issues with MOTs or anything and it wasn't mentioned when I was stopped by the police and recommended to fit rear mud flaps Embarassed

My issue with the bumper mounting is the number plate is slightly proud of the standard bumper so annoys me when I clean it.

Think I may just trim it down a bit.

Nope. I'd have to see a traffic officer on the road to get pulled Rolling Eyes
