I'm sure I have seen somewhere a trick where you drill the spring clip holes out and fit small padlocks with long shackles. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Both have been done
 The padlocks can suffer though from the salt  I used to just leave mine in the back, which I got fed up with so reverted back to a fixed one now, and less rattling. |

I've got plenty of additional security on my Defender but nothing on the tow hitch! |

I used to use one of the genuine DB locking pins and it was (a) expensive for what it was and (b) utterly useless! Stuck behind a Defender it is a magnet for road crud, salt, and who knows what, and even though I used to bind it with insulating tape whenever I used it, within about 6 weeks it had become unusable.
I then binned the lock part, and tapped a suitable thread on the end of the pin so I could fit a decent quality keyed locking wheel nut to the end of the pin. That lasted ok, but was a hassle, so I stopped using it. I now keep the slider(s) safely inside the vehicle and only fit them when needed (in fact since I went over to using a 2" receiver coupling, I keep the whole caboodle inside the vehicle when not in use. When in use I fit a padlock and chain when necessary). |

It's not to stop it being stolen, it's to stop the trailer being stolen, when it's on, its hitch is locked but that's pointless if you can just pull the pins out

I wouldn't rely on the DB lock to stop my trailer being nicked, that's what the padlock and chain is for!
However every little helps, it would be better than nothing. |

Not when you say stop at a services etc or pull in to pick something up. The hitch lock will stop it being detached easily but it's pointless on a sliding detachable hitch.

I agree, that's what the padlock and chain is for. The DB lock I found to be too fiddly, unreliable, and ultimately too weak (eventually when it finally died and wouldn't unlock I removed it using brute force and it toom seconds only).

I have both a Fixed and 'Non-Fixed' Slider on my DB Drop Plate...All off the back of a NAS Rear Step...
Fixed The Lower Slider has an ALKO Extended Reach 50mm Dia Ball Tow Hitch. The Upper Bolts go through the Slider, Drop Plate and link to the 'Bracing Metalwork' leading back to the Chassie. This arrangement 'secures' the Slider (to a degree) Strengthens the forces at work with the Drop Plate, and prevents any 'rattle' of the Slider on the Drop Plate. The Padlock on the retention Pins would be a effective as those used on Storage Hunters, and I have replaced this now with a simple thick cable pull, again adding nothing really as the two Pins are 'locked' and don't easily rotate, or be withdrawn through the Slider. Non-Fixed The Top Slider has the NATO Hitch and is generally not left on the vehicle, just put into service occasionally, the NATO Hitch is generally around £150-200 second hand, (this one was £30 at an MOD Auction) but I would still not like to loose it, but for the way I use this Hitch, with an open Trailer (Rapier) I would not leave this unattended, so the easily removable set up I have I don't view as a problem. The Fixed Set Up is more important to Secure as it tows our Caravan and even when away and not Towing, if someone revealed me of my Slider and Tow Ball it would be both inconvenient (i.e  ) and a hassle to sort out that I'd rather not have.
