Turbo questions tuning
Hi all,

Does anyone know what the maximum boost a standard td5 turbo could theoretically generate without overspooling? Im playing around with my stage three tuned td5 and have had a couple of incidents where the turbo cuts dramatically on full load. This has been at around 1.75 bar. I think it could be the intake pipe collapsing as it does not trigger engine protection limp mode.

Any ideas what othe tuned td5s are running?

Thanks

James

It could be the maf sensor tripping out. This doesn't bring on the engine management light but does cut the power. One way of stopping it is a dual channel limit box. Much over 20 psi and the standard turbo becomes inefficient Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Thanks for the comments guys. It is analive turbo with the billet wheel etc. As of this morning it seems to be happy at 1.7 bar which is just over 24psi. I just want to work out the thoretical limit of boost on this turbo so I do not damage the thing. It also has an uprated map sensor so should cope.

Boost is too high.

The standard turbo will put out 30psi max but ideally set at 18psi anymore and you get lag, even with an uprated MAP+raised boost limit or boost box. If you are running higher boost i suggest you use a boost controller/bleed vlave to properly control the boost as the standard (even forge) actuator is not up to the job of much past 20psi.

MAFs are hit n miss, including genuine ones some will run gladly at 24psi some wont

Edit
Just saw youve an alive turbo. Is it Hybrid or VNT? Either way 22 - 24psi is the sweet spot any more and lag.

Hi again,

It is the hybrid turbo. Seems smooth at 1.7 bar but will knock it down a bit and see how it performs.

Still a touch too high. 22 is optimal for a hybrid,as I said best to use bleed valve or boost controller. Other wise you end up with "boost creep" which is not good!

Thanks for that - could you explain the bleed valve or boost controller so I can understand how they work alongside the current setup?

Basically its a little valve that sits in between the actuator and pipe, it bleeds off excess air so you get the correct boost.

Set the actuator to standard then adjust the boost controller up or down till you hit 22psi which is ideal for a TD5 hybrid, any more and it lags.

More boost doest always mean more power/better running.
