Door key or valet key part number?
I'm looking to get a valet key for my 2016 Defender. It has the newer type key.
I know the key itself doesn't contain any electrics but I want to stash it in my wetsuit so I'm looking to get something as small as possible, just the blade really. Make cars come with a valet key which is just a blade really. Can these be got? Or are there any other key that would work?

The older one, from like a Defender TD5? Yea, that's a nice size key. Will it work though? Is it the same blade?? I thought the blade was different?

Blade is the same as a "Puma" key. It has to be as Land Rover superceded the old keys (AAU8276 and STC4798) to the Puma type (CWE500390) Smile

Try a good local key cutter rather than ordering online, they may have a range of suitable blank blades and you can pick the slimmest.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I can reccomend Timpsons (usually found in a small ISO container type kiosk outside Tescos)

I broke the key in my pocket a while back (it was cracked anyway) and they were very helpful. Had blanks on the peg ready to go. Think it was £11 all in for a blank and a cut.

Their blanks were just flat metal, no plastic ends so nice and slim

If I have a key number for my door lock, beginning R01XXXX can I take it to someone like timpsons to cut a key, I am assuming not, if not where is a good place to get one from?

if you just want the blade, then get any old key cutting place to copy your existing key, if it comes with a plastic top, just hack it off with a knife, the blade usually has a tee shaped bit inside the plastic..

Sorry Johnnyd I was replying to the original post, not realising you'd resurrected one from last year.

If you want to order one from the key number, then a Land Rover dealer would be my first port of call. But one of the specialist locksmiths might be able to cut one from the code.

I could be wrong, and hopefully someone will advise if I am, but I understood that if you have the round tag with the key number on it then you can order replacement keys from LR dealers. However, I would be cautious in assuming that the number you have is the correct one if the key you have wont open the door as it is possible the door or ignition lock have been changed at some time in the past without changing all the locks. When I bought my DCPU I had the same problem you have, the pair of keys I had both worked in the ignition but neither would work in the door locks. I found that it was my ignition lock that had been replaced previously so simply bought a replacement ignition lock & door lock barrels & fitted new matching locks all round for about £80.
