Air intake on early defender
I have an early 1985 defender 110. It doesn’t have the air intakes on the side of the front wings, and the vent on the passenger side wong top goes to the heater box.
The current air filter assembly just points the inlet to the front of the passenger front wing, behind the headlight. Is this correct? I’m thinking about changing to a 300tdi and reusing the discovery 300tdi square air filter box, but again, where should the inlet to that actually be? Or am I better sticking with this unidentified air filter metal box? I don’t want to fit a snorkel, as much looking as standard as possible.

Much appreciated!

Yeah, that set up is correct for the year . The intake in the side of the wing came in with the 200tdi engine. Darren

If you are considering an engine transplant then the more modern 200/300/td5 engines really benefit from a fresh air intake. Whether that be in the standard position in the side of the wing or the military raised air intake position in the top of the wing. The former would, if you want to remain 100% standard mean purchasing a replacement wing (or outer wing skin) and a respray.

If you were to acquiesce to fitting a raised air intake then you could easily get away with fitting something like a southdown 4x4 RAI that would simply pass through the top of your wing and connect to whatever airbag you have under the bonnet.

How far are you willing/wanting to go? Replacing even with a 200tdi is a massive upgrade in performance from a TD as well as reliability.

Ah sorry, my mistake. I forgot (or probably blanked from my mind) the 2.5 Turbo! Darren

Not all of them... This is an original 2.5 TD on an E plate IIRC.

You are not wrong there. It does look suspiciously like a Disco TDI...

After a bit of image Googling, it looks like the side vent may have been introduced on civilian models somewhere in the 'E' / 85MY.

This one is described as a 1984 model. Darren

Argh yes, of course! The Diesel Turbo was introduced in '86, which would make the very earliest ones on 'C' plates so if Geoblokes' picture is right, the vent must have been introduced some time during the '87 MY. Darren

'IIRC' suggested scope for an element of doubt Rolling Eyes Darren

Thanks all,

There is a discovery 200tdi in there already, I’m not sure if it was a 2.5d or 2.5TD before - I think it was the 2.5D C reg.
However, I have a low mileage complete discovery 300tdi and so fancy transplanting that in whilst I rebuild on a galv chassis as I haven’t had a 300tdi before.
I want to keep it factory looking, so would rather avoid a snorkel, so perhaps a later passenger outer wing with air intake is required.
Looking at pics on the internet, it seems some use the square plastic discovery air box mounted on passenger side, where as others use a metal one on drivers side. I have the choice between the disco plastic one and the metal one that’s currently in. I can modify the later if needed with a bit of welding, so the next question is what would folks recommend please (and which side wing air intake?)
Thanks!
