Not enough pins on a single 7 pin socket to light up everything. That's why the 12S socket exists.

Either fit a 12S socket as well as your existing 7 pin 12N socket and use a 13 pin to twin-7 pin lead, or better still fit a 13 pin socket.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I'm a bit confused that you mention 8 pin. Trailer sockets are either 13 pin or 7pin.

If you've got the old 7 pin socket, then do you have two sockets (one black and one grey) or just the one? If you've only got the one black socket then you wont have a reverse light connection, as the reverse light is in the suplementary grey 7 pin socket.

So you have two choices, either fit the 12S grey socket and use an adaptor or just fit the 13 pin socket on the Defender. The 13 pin sockets are much better than the old 7 pin sockets. They're more waterproof, the pins are stainless steel and they're rated to a higher current.

The Genuine 13 pin kit is only about £120 from land rover, and plugs into the socket behind the RH tail lights.

You've not filled in your Defender profile so can't advise based on year of build. Td5 and later Defenders have a dedicated socket for the tow electrics, so cutting into the wiring is not needed.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Depends on the age of the defender. I know for sure that 2002 onwards have a multi plug in the wheel arch. Reverse live is at that plug for sure Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Is there much work involved fitting an additional 13 pin plug on defender?

as above it depends on the year of your Defender. What year is your Defender?
