PJ, trust everyone walked away ok.

Have you looked underneath to see if the bracing arms on the tow bar have done any damage to the chassis rails?
There's obvious some damage to the rear cross member, but I'd be concerned that there may be hidden damage further along.

Also worth getting the caravan checked over make sure nothing has rippled there also. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

Sorry to see this, but at least no one hurt. Battle scars? Neutral Hope it isn't too serious and you get it sorted out promptly. If it needs new chassis then I'd recommend speaking to Matt Spencer at Carriages Auto Services, hear nothing but good things about it. Just speak to Ecosse on here.

Good luck Thumbs Up James

That tow ball looks bent along with the drop plate. I would certainly want the chassis carefully inspected and measured up.

The law of action and reaction, looking at the damage to the towing equipment I would suspect that the caravan A frame/chassis is damaged. They would warrant at least a careful inspection by a caravan mechanic.

Glad no one is hurt. Hopefully the metalwork can soon be sorted out.

It’s done the whole front end

The rear has folded towbar dropplate under x member and pulled top captive bolts so has blown x member bottom support bars are yet to be inspected but I don’t hold much hope can’t see any kinks in the chassis but closer inspection tomorrow may reveal different

It may be down to the insurer whom they want to inspect/fix it so will see tomorrow 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

Ouch glad everyone is okay, i'll just echo previous points and say that the chassis needs to be thoroughly checked before you make any decisions about putting it back on the road. 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Glad all ok. The garage that the insurance company send it to should "drop test" the chassis, this involves lots of chalk and a plum-lime, might be lasers now? My job still uses the old school approch, this shows if the chassis has twisted at all. If it is and they say it's a write off not sure how the insurance would react to you providing a galved chassis. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

PJ, insurance companies tend to use their preferential repair centres. (Read that as they get the best rates from, not best work!)

I would suggest you hold out for getting it inspected at a Land Rover specialist rather then the insurance general repair shop.

I agree with Brendan's comments re specialist bodyshop. But - insurance companies will write off a vehicle if the costs are too high against the book value of the Defender. Any chassis damage will probably result in a write off. In that case the insurer will offer you a settlement figure and sell on the Defender. You can at that stage offer to buy back the written off vehicle.
This would enable you to re-chassis and repair, although the value of the restored vehicle will always be lower as it will always recorded as a write off.
Hope it doesn't come to that and you can get a good repair.

I’ve recently had a similar amount of damage to the rear of my 90 (not quite as bad, but very similar), a bit of feedback from my experience;

- Ensure you pick a body shop that you trust and knows their way around a Defender. If you don’t know any, ring a couple of local LR dealers and get their recommendations of where they use.

- Don’t let your insurance company dictate where it goes – it will be totally your choice who repairs it.

- Mine has similar rear damage (no front) plus the tailgate. The tow pack (plate, ball and straps) are all replaceable (obviously) and the X-member repairable, but the body shop who have mine were concerned that the energy had gone up through the tow support straps and into the chassis.
They inspected all the welds and mounts and after a thorough check found that because the straps had buckled, the hit hadn’t caused any damage to the chassis. So that’s what you need to look out for.

- He also mentioned that even if it is financially viable, if the body needs to come off for the repair the insurance company most likely wouldn’t accept the repair, apparently they wouldn’t consider the Defender repairable due to the unknown scope and warranty of such a large job….so prepare yourself for the worst I’m afraid. My 90 Project : http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic52774.html
