I am a single lad, and have been on dating sites on and off. There is a lot of false profiles out there to be wary of and some that sign up are not into dating at all, just to play games. You really have to filter through a lot of profiles to find the ones that are genuine, I can go for months with out getting a single message! I have sent out a few messages to women and its 50 / 50 that I will get a response. So I just move on if I don't, I have had some want to meet up but want to message or text more, laugh is there is only so much of that you can do. Then you have to pull the plug, 6 months ago a lass was messaging me, we did get the swopping numbers stage but it turned out to be a waste of time, I was the one doing the texting, and waiting for days for a reply. I didn't hound her at all with text messages mind, I just dropped it after 2 weeks. What makes me laugh is why message people for ages, then ask for the number then not really reply?? that's beyond me that one.
All the ones that I have dated from online sites, 2 have been decent that's about it. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Regarding the post above yes, I agree.
There a lot of fakes and fraudsters, you can normally spot them a mile off 99% of the time though.
Especially when they message, and then their account disappears in about ten mins of no reply. Laughing Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

I am so glad I am not in the market for friendship and a relationship.
I really feel for you all. I'm not sure where I would start Shocked

Don't be too disheartened. It seems to have a strange way of finding you, and mostly when you are not looking for it.

I am in no way an expert in these things (lost the Gig to Marge Proops - Google her if you are too young), but if there is one piece of advice, don't get hung up on looks and profile pictures. Make up can hide a multitude of sins and even me, with my natural good looks, chiseled features and six pack stomach (cough cough), are all sort of slipping somewhat these days. The adonis - Whistle - that the current Mrs Rashers married is somewhat, how can I put it....... well there's more of me now (so I am actually better value for money?) than there was when I met her and the hair has gone grey (in a Paul Holywood kind of a way - I wish) and the hips are shot to bits and my glasses are now like the bottom of Coke bottles.

If you really are after a special person who you would like to spend a long time with, try to find the person, not just the looks. Much nicer to live a happy fun life than a miserable existence with a stunner, but someone who hates your daily drive and is more happy spending two and half hours doing their hair when all you want them to do is get her to come down Machine Mart with you ??

Having a think about it, I think, if God forbid I had to go looking, I would be thinking about volunteering somewhere or just trying to help out. When you see people in the real world, where they are not trying to impress, you can make an informed decision quite quickly whether they are someone worth pursuing or just not your type.

And if you do find a model with great looks, a rich daddy, a great personality and owns a Defender - all the best Thumbs Up

Have had a chuckle reading this threadI have had mixed experiences with online dating. I started off using tinder, plenty of fish and match. Was good fun meeting different women but most of them on there I found were not really looking for a long term relationship and seemed to spend more time playing daft games then attempting to strike a meaniful conversation. I then tried some of the country dating sites and found I was meeting women with more of a common interest. I went on some great dates and three years later I have met my wife to be....its all a game of numbers really Thumbs Up

I think online dating can be great fun but recommend trying some of the less mainstream sites. The free ones attract a load of trouble from my experience

Just a few comments from me, as I've been through what Dan the OP is experiencing, albeit a fair while ago.

I was 45, divorced, living in the middle of nowhere and doing two jobs (one was farming, single handed).

At no point or at any time was I meeting any single women.

Tried doing blind dates. Total waste of time.

Then I found a singles group, where up to 250 single/divorced people, split roughly equal between the genders, met at various locations for dances, dinners etc.

At first it was daunting and I was hopeless at talking to single women (after 25 years of marriage!) And as for dancing - I used to run out to the car park when the music started!

Gradually it got better and I got used to talking to women again and made a few friends - didn't fancy them but it was fun and I was getting used to going out again.

Eventually a woman turned up and after a while we became friends. Found we had a lot in common.

Twenty years later we are still together and married (and yes, I swore I would never marry again!)

I am not photogenic, and no way would we have met if just relying on a photo on a dating site.

So look for singles groups and get used to mixing and chatting to women again.

You may feel awkward and stilted at first, but keep at it.

Women who looked right through me as if I wasn't there, when I first started, were actually chatting me up towards the end, when my confidence and ability to socialise had returned.

Above all, don't put pressure on yourself. You won't be happy and you won't look it.

Women don't like miserable looking men!

Good luck. Thumbs Up

Start up a Land Rover dating site, or motor dating site, you will then have the pick of the crop Wink The guys on a sailing forum occasionally mention a sailing dating site, good idea, similar interests etc
