No bother, it stops my dad chucking away a parts that are still ok, He has a bit of a habit of doing that, the Censored chucked the drive flanges i had spare. I could have offered those on here. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

What a difference the piece of metal has made, the door shuts spot on with a good solid sound and i'm well happy with the outcome Very Happy


Hi Clayton, it's been a little while now since you tried this fix. How's it holding up?

Mine is gone in the same place - seems they all do. I have a repair panel to make a proper fix, but I don't weld and can't manage to sort this at the moment so I'm looking to your example as something which should hopefully make an improvement and last a little longer. Donald

Hi there Don

The fix is holding up really good as up to now, no signs of the door not shutting like it use to, it's shutting very solid as when i first did this fix Thumbs Up 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

Brilliant, thanks mate. I'll have a go at that then! I'll be at that stage in the next week or so, so it's good to have a little more confidence that it will keep the door going for a bit longer before taking it off for a more involved new panel/weld repair.

Just to say that don't forget that when you drill the bolt hole on the right hand side, make sure there is no gap in the crack part Wink 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

Thanks Clayton - good advice, and easy to overlook.

I hope I'll be OK with that though. When i had the 'new' doors fitted and painted there was already a crack there, so they welded it - but obviously welding along a stress line by itself wasn't enough. There's enough of the weld left though to be keeping things together.

So after some answers from LRA i set about on the Saturday just gone to do my window blocks as i think there was some sort of silicone instead of some type of gasket.

I started on the N/S window block first, in the pic before work commenced

Once the block was off you can see that there is very little of anything there Rolling Eyes
just a bit more on from where it came off

no wonder water was coming in Sad

I then set to giving the area's a good clean of all the c--p that was on there to give a good seal, i then made a rubber gasket to fit the block ( i followed LRA's info on this )

When i took the bolts out and the metal plate, it was a bit rusty there so i put a good amount of Kurust on to help it and the plate and bolts were quite rusty, but i had remembered that a in one of my spare boxes i had a set, so i used them as they were like new.

The top ones are the old ones and the bottom ones are the newer ones

With plenty of copper grease on each bolt, the window block was put back on and the gasket looked proper there and hopefully keeping the water out

I repeated this on the O/S window block as well, window block off

The bolts and plate were not as bad as the N/S ones, but i still used the newer ones

Well pleased with the outcome and was a please to do with no set backs

I bet you were getting water in before hand? Mine was just had plain silicon which did the square root of bot all. Gaskets its got to be with some dum dum tape. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
