Insurance Rip Off for Basic Modifications - LATEST UPDATE .
I was with Admiral for 12 years but this year their renewal was absolutely ridiculous at £1950 for both cars that do very little miles each year and nothing would bring it down more than £20 each car . £1950 is the prices I used to get quoted back in the 90's when I used to run about in cars with RS fords and all the GTi's of the day .Loyalty obviously doesn't pay anymore so I started shopping around .

I typed all my details for both cars into that Money Supermarket and straight away loads more cheaper versions came up .
£350- £400 ish for each car . More acceptable . The cheapest ones I had never heard of so I went with the 4th cheapest and recognisable RAC . So I phoned the guy and ticked all the boxes for the HSE LUX Discovery 4 which was just over £400 .

Then we got on to the Defender which he was quoting first at £349 . As we progressed he asked if there were any modifications . I said that the windows were tinted to UK legal limits by a professional company and Boost alloys had been made black along with the aluminium chequer plate - Not really a huge modification I would have said and quite a common one if anything by todays standards . His price of £349 then jumped to £1200 . The guy couldnt believe it himself either I dont think and he tried everything to get it to drop but he couldnt budge it down by anymore than £10 .

So needless to say I didnt go with RAC . He gave me the advice that every modification even as small as changing lettering or decals or changing to better LED headlamps should be declared as the companies are really starting to tighten up on such things . While we were on the phone he even looked at my address on google map to see that my vehicles were going to be kept in the garage as stated .

So off I went again and tried other ones and I ended up getting the Discovery for £440 from Go Skippy and the Defender with its basic mods for £365 from Flux Direct . Not bad all in all but I was just letting you guys know how sneaky and petty that these insurance companies can be now with even the slightest most basic of modifications and will use any excuse not to pay out if the vehicle has even the slightest of modifications . 2006 DEFENDER 90 TD5 CSW XS

incidentally, a roof rack also counts as a modification.....

since it's an addition and hardly a modification, I wonder if polish does too?

Insurance companies really are turning out to be the sum of the earth . Even asking questions like have you ever had a windscreen claim in the past 5 years ? Never been asked that one before until now . They actually make you feel like a criminal or somebody thats up to no good . 2006 DEFENDER 90 TD5 CSW XS

As I have said in the past, the insurance industry is corrupt to its core and will remain so until such time as it is no longer a legal requirement to have compulsory cover but instead insurance is advisable but voluntary. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

you can move to NZ insurance is not legal requirement to have compulsory cover but instead insurance is advisable but voluntary. BUT you will have to cover your cost in full to all party

Nothing wrong with having to pay insurance over here and everyone should but to get ripped off and quoted silly quotes all because a vehicle has powder coated wheels or upgraded better headlamps like many many Defenders have out there ? Thats just plain opportunistic shafting by insurance companies . No wonder so many people have no qualms about putting in fake whiplash claims against them . If they didnt try to shaft folk at every cut n turn then I would like to think more people would think twice before they followed the claim culture out there . 2006 DEFENDER 90 TD5 CSW XS

Flux has always been excellent for me regarding mods, I tell them every mod I do and the only one thats ever caused an increase was fitting a hybrid turbo which added £30...

I don't think that it is the Insurance companies that are the scum its the scum that are forcing the Insurance companies to react the way they are. Crash for cash, peoples driving standards and the couldn't careless attitude to other peoples property because they know that it is insured and they will not have to pay out £££££'s to make any compensation.

I have a friend who has had 6 windscreens replaced in 18 months, all of which have been replaced by his insurance company. I have been a passenger in his vehicle and can see why, he drives that close anything flicked up by the vehicle in front will hit the windscreen, I asked about the 1 second advice he laughed and said that was old school now that the breaking systems are so good.

I'm with the N.F.U. and have notified them of everything from roof rack, steering wheel change, larger seat base for the driver , steel wheels and softer suspension change which they required a qualified person to carry out nothing has incurred an increase in the premium. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

The vast majority of people and drivers are not like the scum who do crash for cash and drive as close as your pal .I bet every member on here is an honest type of guy who drives quite sensible nowadays .
In my own instance I had 16 years NCB going on to that Defender even though they said they would only recognise 9 as that is their limit for NCB and at 40 year old I expected those type of astronomical figures when I was 21 with RS badged Fords and GTi's that were properly modified . I was shocked when the RAC tried to shaft me by nearly £900 extra on an original quote of just over £300 all because I had black wheels and chequer plate with legal limit tinted windows . Make no mistake - Insurance companies have us all by the balls and they are out there to rip honest hard working folk off just as much as any other large organisations like utilities companies etc . 2006 DEFENDER 90 TD5 CSW XS

Agreed, but it is the scandalous cost of the uninsured and the fraudulant claim-makers who drive the cost up for the law abiding.

Computer-based quoting and the complete absence of anyone with a brain cell from the insurance industry doesn't help either. When I declare a modificiation, for example, a limited slip differential, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect that at least someone in the unsurance company knows what one is. An advantage of a specialist such as Flux is that they should know (and indeed appear to know) that on a Defender an LSD is a traction aid and doesn't increase the insured risk, whilst on a road car an LSD probably does mean that the insured risk increases since it is the sort of thing that appeals to the demographic that likes Corsas.

You need to take time, and work around the computer algorithms …
Last week I was scheduling my week and allowed ½ day to renew car insurance. I am with one of the UK major insurance companies. My companion raised an eyebrow … Rolling Eyes (half a day for one phone call?)
Her 2015 SLK and my truck can honestly be combined this year. We got both for less than 350. And that’s with both of us having had a minor claim against us 4 or 5 yrs ago.
It took the ½ day.
The person at the other end of the line can initially only do what the algorithm says, but with perseverance, some referring up the line (it took a lot of referring a couple of years ago to get extra seats approved), and re jigging of the input data where possible
– oh and in our case the computer reduced the quote after we had input a request for a fresh quote on line with exactly the same and correct parameters.
Our excess are high (hers plus another 200 for a boy racer car) but premium low. That’s our calculation/risk. But low insurance, if you want it, is there. Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz
Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ...

All fitted prior to purchase and by main dealer , my insurance company classes them as factory options not mods
Good old NFU , and you speak to a human in an office with a cup of coffee !

How any optional extra wether fitted at time of purchase or retrospectively can be classed as a modification is beyond sense !

No doubt seat covers would incur a £500 premium !

I am insured with NFU and have been for more years than I care to count. When I insured the truck with them I presented them with a list of modifications that covered 4 pages of A4. They had a read through it, made a couple of p[hone calls and said that everything was good. Premium didn't budge by a pound.
