Were the B and C pillars zinc plated?

hi
asking around, were the B and C pillars in the TD5 range zinc plated?
It is a 2003 model and did not have that much rust at the bottom.
i had them shot blasted and was wondering if i need a chemical dip before hot dipping them.

hi. i am gavling. but i am wondering if they had an E coat of zinc appplied like the body cappings. It does not allow for a good hot dip coat. i wil have them chemically treated anyway since they have some paint inside that i cannot reach into removing.

Understood, my experience has been bare metal with nothing on the peices and bare metal with primer over it. Never have I seen anything else I wouldn't worry about it. Just galvie it 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

Appearantly the b and C posts during td5 production where not electro plated. stupid me and all the worries i get myself into. they are happily piling up light surface rust in garage awaiting shipment to sicily... Not so looking forward at the resultant layer of zinc. as i am sure it will be full of dribbles spikes and uneven layers to level out or deal with..

You will need to chemically strip them. There is e-coat on the inside of the b pillar that will cause problems with galvanizing. Well worth the effort though!

Hi.
they have piled such rust on the outside i was hoping it was ok.

Does the Chemical treatment damage the bare metal on the outside?

Stripping won't damage the metal. If you have rust, you should sandblast first, then chemical dip. it's a Landrover thing...

they have been sand blasted a week or more ago. surface rust is appearing. and i applied some chemical paste to remove paint left from the process. the issue is i need to send them from malta to sicily through a middle man and i cannot deal with the company directly and ask for a chemical bath to remove e coating. i am sure they will just go through pickling and straight to dipping.... stupid obsession with rust prevention! they were such a good solid pair with few rusty spots that were easy to sand away and repaint sigh..

Light surface rust re-appearing isn't a big deal, just can't have any heavy flaking rust when going to galv.

Issue with e coat on the inside of the b pillars is out could contaminate the galv process on that inside portion. Not sure if pickling will solve the issue. it's a Landrover thing...

i have come to the bitter conclusion that i may drill out spot welds and split the panels and have them shot blasted and then re weld them slowly by filling holes.. there is quite a lot of spot welds to cut and refill. panels may twist.

unless i can buy a piece of plastic tarp and buy several gallons of hydrochloric acid and do the chemical cleaning myself... which is risky and unhealthy

i could ask the Sicilian company to chemically dip them but i don't feel like they will give a care with the work load at hand. since i don't have direct contact with company..

mind is blowing haha

EH managed to find a company on the other end of malta that can do electro zinc coating. while on the phone he said that they can do that size. and i do hope!

I guess if i give them a new zinc plating coat it will be enough for me. we dont apply road salt even if it sleeps outside but i guess if i soak them up with cavity wax or grease it will still last a long time.
