That sounds frustrating,
A very small amount of oil is normal from the crankcase breather. Do you mean the pipe between the crankcase and the air filter box was leaking? |

Couldn't diagnose it without being able to pressurise the system but dealer did this and said breather was leaking air when a small amount of pressure was applied. It sounded to me very much like a split intercooler hose and behaved in a very similar way. It's been a bit hissy for a couple of days so I was kind of expecting it and had commented the day before that I thought I had a hose on its way out. Not heard from dealer today but will ring later for an update.

Just had a call from the dealership which I am not naming YET. They want me to authorise over £1400 of investigative work to just diagnose the problem. No chance as if it is not covered under warranty I will be liable.
12 hours work. I could have the whole engine in nuts n bolts in 12 hours. I have contacted extended warranty and they say they will be speaking to the very short staffed dealership in the morning as they can't get through now. What good is a warranty if it costs to use it? |

No I have a two year extended warranty with landrover. Finishes Aug next year

Even better
They now want me to authorise £1750 of work to remove the head. Extended warranty will now send a tech out to the dealership to check diagnosis and confirm amount of work necessary. |

I don't get why you need to approve cost of warranty work that should be FOC?

Depends on the final outcome and if covered by warranty. I agree though. A customer should not be expected to pay anything with a full warranty. Let's wait and see the final outcome. I am still suspicious of the initial diagnosis but the warranty engineer will confirm this.

Warranty engineer has been out and has confirmed its head off to investigate and fix. On smoke test there was smoke exiting via crank case breather. What is likely to have gone wrong?

My first suspicions for a 2.2 would be bore damage resulting from oil dilution, or possibly bore damage resulting from variable-displacement oil pump malfuction. Presumably is has had the oil pump recall carried out?
