That's what I'd do anyway, needs care though or the bit could pierce into the air box if not careful.
If they broke the bracket make sure you get it put right too. Or else.  |

I am trying to remove the air cleaner housing from a 2.2 as well, but cant understand where the "3 bolts" (according to the manual) are. Any tips where to look please? Thanks!

I wonder when someone (Allisport, BAS maybe) will bring out a new airbox design...??? Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I thought from all the research done on restriction to air intake that BAS was going to produce a new air intake system, but not seen anything yet.

When I installed my Safari snorkel about 3 years ago, from memory I think I removed the headlight assembly to gain better access to the air box as I did not want to drill out the air box support bracket rivets. I used some dish washing liquid with a bit of water and coated the fixtures after removing the support bolts. As the studs passing through the rubber grommets are tight, you need to move/rock the box around a little to allow the lubricant to get into the joint to allow slip. Mine has air conditioning so the outer foam needed protecting so as not to get damaged when removing the box. I did not disconnect the air conditioning hose.
I was still difficult to remove but I got it out. Hopefully I won't have to do it again for a very long time. |

I think it is only difficult if you have a/c.
I've had the airbox on and off repeateadly while sorting out various issues and improvements on my (non a/c) 2.4, with no real problems, although it is a bit of a fiddle. One thing that makes it much easier is if you shorten the plastic prongs on the airbox the first time you get it off, and lubricate the rubber doobries with vaseline before refitting. Also, take the lid off the airbox, and remove the entire lid complete with air hose from the turbo and hence from the car to give yourself more room. |

Thanks for your help and suggestions. I ended up cutting the originial air intake and doing all the modifications with the airbox in place since there was the A/C line on top of it and wasn't sure it would go through without breaking something.

I always but put a disposable glove over any open hose outlets or inlets too, keeps any debris out completely whilst removing or refitting.

Thats what i did as well. I used some tape to cover inlets instead. Gloves are a better idea though!

Just wanted to confirm that it is possible to remove the airbox on an aircon Defender and without drilling out the rivets, or unbolting the aircon.
As mentioned you have to loosen up the 4 rubber grommets, then undo the 3 bolts and let the bracket drop. Top Fan shroud needs to come off and unbolting the lower one, which can't be taken off but at least moved around. Trick is to get the airbox inlet pipe facing the direction of the belt/ fan. Reinstatement goes similar with the bracket attached by only one bolt (closest to the shock), hanging downwards. Drop the airbox inlet pipe first and then pull across to get the rest of the box under the wing. But be warned, it is a  of a job. m |
