It's going to be...
It's going to be electric, isn't it? Can anything else explain the prolonged wait? I'm fully expecting at least a hybrid, now. My guess is that they've seen the interest in EVs, and their own iPace, and stalled it while they sort out hybrid power. Seriously, what else can explain it going on, and on, and on?

I think you're spot on. "At least a hybrid"
If it hasn't got the option then it's going to be outdated before it's even launched.

With the rush to ban diesel from the large cities of the world gathering pace, it would be madness not have a hybrid or full electric straight away or soon after launch.

Well, if it ended up being anything like the Bolinger B1, I'd forgive everything they've done lately. A basic, no-nonsense, modular EV capable of some work.

Not very likely, unfortunately.

No, it's taking so long because they probably had to start over on it at least twice.....imagine the expectations of releasing a completely new Defender....

Setok:
The Bollinger B1 does need a design studio to draw up better styling, though. However, nothing wrong with all the moving bits, and I understand it's receiving great attention in the US.

I'm sure that LR would have thought about motors in each corner (I did, years ago - even contacted Siemens about it at the time), though I understand that makes it more expensive. I have to say that I will be shocked, now, if the new Defender isn't at least a hybrid. The EV scene is moving at a really fast pace. If you read car news online, you'll see EV cars being announced by just about every manufacturer. It is the future, a close future. The iPace will be a massive success, and I hope that LR will have foreseen that the new Defender just HAS to be hybrid.

The defender is currently a cultural/fashion icon, they're probably still trying to get it "right" since the concepts released so far are poor (in my opinion)

I suppose they've got to decide if they want a utility vehicle in their lineup as LR is moving increasingly toward luxury, can you imagine the new disco towing a mini digger... I can't 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

At risk of speaking for Kit, he doesn't mean ability, he means few, if any, would use the new Disco in the way that people used the old ones. For example, I once owned a Range Rover, and I lived on one of Reading's worst Council housing estates. Whereas today's RRs are for footballers, their wives, and...well I had better not say any more as some owners might be reading. Rolling Eyes

Sorry to disappoint you Kit but saw a new Disco 5 towing an Ifor Williams Plant Trailer complete with JCB vibrating roller last week. They obviously do exist but I agree it's going to be a rare sight. Defender 90XS SW

Spotted this a few months back in the lakes...

Didn't think anything about it at the time, but could it be a hybrid engine they are testing?

Haha cant see Land Rover producing an electric vehicle anytime soon, lets face it water and electrics does not mix and if they couldn't even fix the water ingress problems on the old Defender I rest my case Laughing

Except for when you want a long journey and you've got a limit on your journey.
Then your bacic to petrol diesel.

Electricity takes generation and that isn't fully clean either, so I fail to see much that is really achieved.

I wouldn't mind betting what ever is released that it will be an extortionate price, and will not have similar character.
