Aircon Evaporator freezing
Hi all

In the hot weather here and hit upon a problem with the AC. Has anyone experienced freezing of the Evaporator before? Seems I have this problem where I gradually lose AC efficiency to the point where the temperature of the air increases. I only noticed this when we stopped and I let the engine idle to cool and turned the AC off which then ran cold for the next 15 minutes and dumped a load of condensate on the floor below the Defender.

I now have to make sure that I turn off the AC periodically to prevent the freezing.

Just FYI.. I am running in recirculation air mode mostly but happens on both recirculation and fresh.

Assuming this is a sensor fault on the evap but as I don't have any drawings or data with me would appreciate any and all input from you fellows.

Cheers.

Hmm... Based on what you've told us, it's either the sensor on the cooling coil or the cooling coil is already dirty and needs a cleaning.

Sensor on the evaporator, it's a common enough issue that L/R have changed the part at least three times and have a tech bulletin covering it: https://www.defender2.net/gallery/albums/u...0icing.pdf

Its a pig of a job to replace as the a/c has to be degassed then the heater needs to come out and be dismantled to replace the sensor.

Not to mention that the whole dash board needs to be disassembled and then re-assembled after all is said and done. Please note the new positioning of the sensor on the coil and the proper part numbers.

Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

That's liable to happen on any air-con left at 'max' setting.
Do you turn it down after a few minutes at 'max'?

Have had something similar on long run with aircon on low speed, after couple of hours aircon stops working and temperature goes up. Switch off for little while and then back on and away she goes again. Sounds like same issue. Mine is 2013 model however and i note the bulletin only goes up to 2012

Glad this baby is still under warranty! Thanks for all the confimations gents which confirms my suspicions. As we are in northern Corsica right now it's not the best time for this bad boy to fail. However luckily it is manageable.

As we live in the sunny paradise of the UK I have never had this issue, but these 35degree days are testing the Defender to say the least.

LR can do this the same time as the GB/TB oli seal that was found leaking during the inspection last week.

Greetings from beautiful Northern Corsica... My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender.

Just had the 110 back from the dealers after having the rear oil seal replaced under warranty. They found the drain pipe from the evaporator blocked, and it seems that the condensate backed up and caused the evaporator to freeze.

Something worth checking before a long trip to hot climate.

Back to the dealers tomorrow as now the clutch bites as soon as you lift the peddle, and the peddle travels about half way before doing anything to the clutch!

Damn Defenders! My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender.
