Axle Rust treatment
I had a quick read of the sticky about corrosion treatments and thought I would check what would members advise to use as a rust treatment on the Axles.

My axle casings are getting a light rust layer and the brake dust shields are looking rough.

I use it predominantly off-road, it's a road legal off-roader/Challenge truck, I think that painting them will be a chore and really requires them coming off to do a proper job.

I was thinking spray with a rust converter or similar them rust protection. What would you suggest?

I bought some Krust but was not over impressed and cost for small quantity is high. If not I will spray with waxoyl as I bought some 5L tins a while ago or duck oil.

Normally its so caked in mud it just defeats the rust prevention applied, hence thinking of a rust converter first.

Hopefully there will be a few days without rain so I can crawl under and treat it. Plus repaint my rock sliders and roll cage...everything seems to rust well Rolling with laughter

Ready for the winter season. Cool

Hello LANDROVER

I was amazed how quickly the Axles (For that read All Running Gear) developed surface rust... Exclamation

These parts (IMO) were effectually just 'shown' the paint at LR rather than receive any significant protection
prior to starting life...

I went form this...(sorry poor photo but you get the idea... Shocked )

Thanks for the reply.

How much FE-123 did you use? I looked at the previous thread and think you mention .3L?

I see on Ebay it is £27 for 1/2 a litre!

I guess if I do that then use Waxoyl as I already have it should suffice...or should I just get the 4941? I bought tins of Waxoyl to use on my Series 2.

I have to do the fuel tank too as the mud gets in between the rock guard and eats it. Twisted Evil

POR15 Rust Preventive Paint? I see they do a gloss black paint in a red tin for £29.99 for 475ml. Is that what you reccomend? They offer quite a selection of products, and I was not sure what was most suitable.

Thanks for you help. Thumbs Up

POR15 is really good. I use on my forest tools for many years and they have more bad wet work than most land rover suspsnsions. Put only on dry, grease out metal.

Hello LANDROVER

FE-123

I bought 1Ltr and used about 1/3 of it and I had lots to do... Exclamation
It's very thin and goes a long way...

(your E-bay price looks high... Shocked )

Try...

Waxoyl is OK...and if you have it then your half way there...4941 is superior (IMO)
finish, and durability.

My brother has had Por15 applied to a classic car and I have seen this both pre and post application,
also after 5 years (all be it slight on road use) it looks an excellent product with good reviews to back
it up.

This was my shopping list (exc / inc VAT) in 2014

Good Luck SKIP

If using it often off-road often, personally I'd use a rust converter like fe123 or bilthamber hydrate 80, then put a coat of 3125, leave a day then a couple of coats of 4941.

The 4941 will take a couple of weeks to fully gas out and harden - but it never goes fully hard. It's very resilient to knocks off road, but major hits will need touching up every know and then. The aerosol cans of 4941 are ideal for this. I'd touch up mine about every six months, and it would take about 10-15 mins.

Cheers

Steve

They're just e-coated, but to fair an axle tube with take decades of normal use to actually rot out. There are plenty of series 2's knocking about with rusty axles, and they'd have been rusty since the 50's! The rest of the car will fall apart long before the axles rot through.

It's actually self healing to small stop chips. It's fantastic stuff.

As long as you prep the axle as per their recommendations that should work fine. You could also use their chassis black as on the axles it won't get much uv, if it was in sunlight a lot the chassis paint needs top coating. Ray
