Help diagnosing intermittent random engine cut-out
I'd be grateful of any help on what to look for/check for the following:
Over the last couple of weeks I've had 4 or 5 random loss of all power when driving (for maybe just 1 to 2 seconds), and a couple of complete engine stops (when the clutch has been depressed at junctions). Just as if the engine has been switched off momentarily.
In all instances the motor has started & been running absolutely fine beforehand, and afterwards, and when it has stalled it has restarted straight away...
The engine light has not come on, even for a brief moment.
It doesn't seem to be getting worse - I've just driven for 10mins with no issues, but it needs sorting as I'm worried something is on it's way to failing & leaving us stranded!
Any ideas anyone?

Egr valve sticking open perhaps.

Thanks - but would a sticking EGR really cause total engine shutdown? I'd have thought that would be more of a stutter than a stop?
Happened again this morning whilst cruising along in 5th, loss of all power for a few seconds, started looking for a safe place to pull on to the verge but then it springs back to life & no further issues for the rest of the day!
I tried wiggling the ignition switch in case it is a loose connection, but couldn't recreate.
It's one of those things I almost wish it would just fail & stay failed, so I could get to the bottom of it!
Any other thoughts?

Check the following:

Battery earth connection: Make sure it's on tight and not loose.
Main Relay: Is it still good?
VCV: Simple change out and it will improve engine running.
All earth connections of the truck: self explanatory.

These items should get you started. Let us know what you find.

I had a similar random power loss/engine cut out recently. Turned out to be the cylinder head temp. sensor cutting power to prevent overheating. The coolant level was low. The rad had a slight leak. Sounds a bit odd but could be worth checking. Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right.

Thanks both.
I will check the battery, earth & relay connections, and coolant level.

If no change, is the VCV a simple DIY swap? (I don't have a garage, tools or time for anything other than really simple stuff).

You will definitely need tools to swap that out. And, you will have to do a pump learn once the new valve is in.

Hello

My car has done this now 2 times,

Just driving along normally in 6th gear, 40mph and then nothing, speedo goes to zero, everything switches off, for a second or so...then all on and drives fine? Very odd.

Did it this morning, everything off, then split second later all on and drives fine?

Not had time to go through my checks yet - will do at the weekend and update this thread if I find anything useful.

Stacey007,

Check the earth points to be sure they are OK and check that your earth connection at the battery is good. With what happened to me, my connection was a bit loose at the battery earth point and that caused all my woes and not to mention, shortened my battery's life. I added a copper sleeve to the earth post and reattached the clamp and all was well until I had to change the battery due to me living with this problem for a few months. I hope this helps.

Hello

Mine is booked into local garage for a service and 'look' at this prior to a trip to the Lakes and another to Scotland...

I've told him about this and he will 'look' for anything he can while there,

Where are the earth points?

Thanks

Slight update,

Mine is in today at local garage, for service, new Drive flanges, up rated damper, poly steering bush's, spacers, and more importantly to check for this cutting out fault...

Just rang him and he has found a lose earth point. didn't ask where, but could this cause it cutting out?

Hope so, but time will tell I guess? Will collect tomorrow.

Thanks

^ Don't forget to ask where the loose earth was? Thanks.

Not found anything on mine yet, but it's behaving atm.

Update...

1600 miles up to Skye all around and back, It did cut out once near Blair Athol then started straight away....

Now home I've done a local run to farm supply shop and it cut out once... then restarted (on its own as normal)

Just now been out for dinner and came back, I spotted the traction control / ABS light flicker on but nothing cut out...

No fault codes, it does not go into limp mode.

Will stop by garage tomorrow but any thoughts what it could be (another / same earth strap come lose?)

Thanks

I had the ABS/TC lights randomly flash on and off, and intermitant rear side lights/Indicators a while ago,
The Earth on the gearbox/transfer box was the culprit.

This was a tricky one to find, as the ring terminal had broke under the insulation, so while looking ok it was not making contact.

Just to add, I didn't have any other symptoms such as cutting out etc.
Still worth checking though, maybe run a new earth to the box?
