England 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Stornoway Grey
Accident Damage - Write Off?
Had a slight accident the other day, insurance company are looking at calling it a total loss.

The damage looks pretty much limited to the wings so might not be too bad? Is there any significant damage to anything under the bonnet?

you could fix that your self with out much trouble, if the chassis is ok. looking at it, it looks like it only needs front end panels and maybe a front tyre and a few other things checking out.
Only reason the insurance will write it off is due to how much land rover will charge per hour to fix it sadly. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

They're probably right in that it would be uneconomical to repair using new parts and paying bodyshop labour rates. However it would undoubtedly be economic to repair using selected recycled or pattern parts and doing the bulk of the work yourself.

A classic Cat D write-off, I suggest (ie uneconomic to repair rather than unrepairable).

Buy it buy it back. Fix yourself, as long as the chassis is still straight!

Looks like you need new steering arms, pair of wings + arches, lights, headlight surround, bumper at the very least.

Id say somewhere in the region of £2 - 3K. CSK recently fixed a 90 that was worse off than this so it is doable.

There is no legal restriction on doing this, but it may be harder to sell the vehicle and it will be worth less that one which does not have a Cat C or D write-off marker with DVLA.

The only items which it is illegal to sell are items where specific legislation exists to prohibit their sale (often but not always with these it is illegal even to have them in your posession). So stolen items, illegals guns or drugs, animals covered by CITES, and many other things, are illegal to sell. Cat C or Cat D write-offs are however not illegal to buy or sell.

How old is the vehicle and what value does it have, as with prices at the moment to write it off is surprising, usually insurance companies write off when the value of the repair exceeds the value of the vehicle, and I cannot see the cost of wings and accessories costing more than the value of the Defender, unless of course the chassis is bent. Actually looking at the damage to the front bumper I would be surprised if there is no damage to the chassis front leg driver’s side. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Its a Puma

Wings and inners are over 2k from LR without paint or plastics

Add bumper, broken/bent steering , Driver's hockey will probably have been pushed through its mount , New tire and possible wheel

All prices HAVE to be based on New Land Rover parts and Labour


Would have thought your looking at the high side of 7K repair bill car is not in hence beyond economic repair

I am sure you can push to get it fixed, one of the lads on the 306 forum a years ago managed to get his car fixed, instead of been wrote off. The 306 was well out of production too, it will take some digging through some old threads to find out how he did it. There was something one of the lads found to make the insurers repair the car.
I do think sometimes insurer will find the quickest and most easiest way on getting out of repairing cars. I think a coach works only gets a few quid or something to write a car off. They would rather get the work in to repair a car and make them pay. After all that's what we are paying insurances for isn't it. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
