New breaks squeal at 50 mph, strange groove on disk
Hi folks,

I'd like to ask for advice. Just had my rear breaks completely remade at a garage (disks, pads, calipers, everything, ), only to find them squealing today at (only!) 50 mph and exhibiting a strange rust circle on the disk (see pic below). Rather weird. Why not squeal at 30 or 60 mph? And why is only the innermost part of the disk rusty? A wrongly aligned break pad, if such a thing is possible?

Now, I am looking for input on this. What on earth is causing this, and is it reason enough to return it to the workshop?

(The squeal by the way went away after stepping on the breaks.)

Would love to hear your informed opinions! Thanks in advance!

Looking at the photo, I would say there is nothing wrong with the disk. The rust you can see looks to be on the area of the disk that isn't in contact with the pads and over time will rust further. The squeal could just be the initial bedding in of the pad to the disk. Even though a new pad and new disk look to have perfectly flat surfaces, there can be minor imperfections. A slight high spot on the pad or the disk results in the pad and disk not making full contact across the whole surface immediately. That can cause the squeal. But after a few uses of the brakes, the pad should bed in fully and work more effectively. If the squeal has now gone away and the brakes feel as though they are working OK, I wouldn't worry.
If the squeal continues take it back and ask the workshop to check that the pads and retaining clips are fitted correctly. Not sure if it is recommended in the workshop manual, but I always apply a thin layer of copper slip type grease on the back of the pads as I was told this helps to stop squealing.

^^^^ I have often heard this regarding copper slip also.

Thanks a lot for your advice, folks! i presume it's either the pads being run in, or something vibrating at a resonance frequency, as it always occurs at exact the same speed.

Maybe it's just part of the Defender soundscape Whistle

I had pad squeal after changing the pads, calipers were partially siezed. It scrapped the new pads as they overheated. I don't know how old or how many miles it has done but could be first sign of seized piston. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Hm, I also just had new calipers fitted... would not be good. They're maybe 3 weeks old, and 2k miles. Was rather pricey altogether.

Is there any way to diagnose stuck calipers? Can you see them move if someone applies the brakes?

I would say if the calipers are new it won't be that. I knew mine were marginal because the pistons were corroded and difficult to push back. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

The easiest way to diagnose a stuck caliper is if the wheel turns freely when off the ground. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Hmm, there might be a thermal cause, though. Squealing starts usually after half an hour on the motorway...

On a sidenote: yours is a 2007 java black 110?

Nice car, got just the same Very Happy

P.S.: wheel turning freely, since it should be held by the handbrake? I will jack it up the next few days and see, thanks for the tip...

Ive had this with seized calipers on both my defender and the wife's car. Pads are fine when cold, but as the calipers forces them to drag on the disk, they heat up and start making a right racket. Usually happens even at low speed though once it starts squealing. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Sounds pretty similar. What confounds me, though - squealing (or rather, chirping) from the brakes only occurs at 50mph. If I step on the brakes, it stops. But if I accelerate, it also vanishes. Rather strange. I'll examine the calipers though by rotating the wheels. Should also see excessive pad wear if that is the reason for the racket...
