Hi Brendan,
Thanks for the info, looks interesting but how would you fit a roof bar to a soft top? Since I posted I have been doing some research re the legality of what I suggested and it seems that you can go to 305mm out each side with no markers etc so should be ok. To be on the safe side I'd probably wrap some reflective tape round the ends of the "package" btw do you do a waterproof cover/bag for the RV4 in its original bag? A Defender is less than 1800 wide over the wheel arch spats - the body is even narrower - so I think you'd be pushing your luck carrying it sideways. Vertically might be an option, I guess, if you can rig up a suitable bracket of some kind. I think it's fair to say that a soft top 90 is the least practical vehicle for this task though. Darren

I found that picture on internet, so I only can guess. I think it is just lying on the softtop frame, there seem to be a bar between them lengthwise to where the tent is fixed to - if this description makes sense...

Just under 2000mm over the mirrors. I still wouldn't fancy it though, to be honest. It's going to be pretty ungainly and the chances of catching it on something in a car park or similar and damaging it seem unnecessarily high

Right, been trying various configurations over the weekend.
When used across the vehicle its probably legal for Spain but you're right LandRoverAnorak, it doesn't look right and, like you, as its low down, I think there may be a danger of catching it, perhaps on a fuel pump or even the Passport booth 
As I want to take a bike anyway I thought id try it poking out the back, I'm making up a rigid cover for the back tub so the tent will be supported for about 70-80% of its length and it does not protrude beyond the bike carrier, result I think! We're having a dry run loading, after I finish the cover, next weekend so I'll take some photos then and post them. Chris 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black. |

I was wondering why you could not have a bit sticking out of the rear tub? I have just bought a Wizz24 - it will fit on the roofrack on my Defender, but I was hoping to use it on camping trips with my 88" rag top series one. The only thing I could do is have it partially sitting on top of the cubby box, and partially sticking out of the back. I never have the rear flap down unless its raining and getting everything wet. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

The reason I originally discounted it was that I could foresee problems with marking the end. We have a rear mounted spare which is offset to the offside so it has to go from behind the passenger seat this means that when you put the obligatory (in Spain) marker board on the end of the Oztent (which in itself would be problematical) it would obscure the rear lights/number plate. The cycle carrier has its own lights and number plate, and it's easy to secure the marker board. When I get round to posting some photos you will see what I mean.
Btw, do you have problems with fumes if you drive with the rear flap open? We do and usually drive with both sides rolled up as well. Chris 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black. |

Nope - never a problem with fumes. You do get the odd whiff occasionally, but its very rare. I sometimes have the front flaps open too - so get a nice through draught. The only issue is on occasions in heavy rain, while travelling at speed, it seems to get sucked into the back somehow? that one beats me! Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Interesting, perhaps petrol fumes aren't as strong as the diesel fumes?
I believe the sucking in of fumes, and rain, is caused by the Bernoulli effect. As the air splits as you drive forward it speeds up as it passes over the top and down the back of the vehicle, this causes a pressure drop sucking the fumes/water into the back.
